The Naval Petroleum Reserves: Proposed Sale and Issues

Description: The Naval Petroleum Reserves (NPR)--consisting of the large Elk Hills Field in California and smaller fields at Buena Vista Hills (CA) and Teapot Dome (WY)--were established in the early 1900s. Congress authorized full production of the NPR in 1976. Production at Elk Hills, the most significant field, peaked at 181,000 barrels per day (b/d) in 1981; currently, it is 65,000 b/d. The Clinton Administration earmarked the NPR for sale in its FY1996 budget, estimating its gross value at $2.6 billion. more

The Pond 2 selenium volatilization study: A synthesis of five years of experimental results, 1990--1995

Description: Microbial volatilization is a potential remedial measure to decrease the selenium inventory in Kesterson Reservoir soils. Past studies in both the field and the laboratory suggest that a significant percentage of the selenium inventory may be removed in this fashion. The objectives of this study include the quantification of selenium losses and a test of a pilot-scale design which in the future may be used in other parts of the Reservoir.

Utilization of fuel cells to beneficially use coal mine methane. Final report

Description: DOE has been given the responsibility to encourage industry to recover and use methane that is currently being released to the atmosphere.
