Passive incentive requirements: a regional assessment

Description: The nation's goal of 20% solar contribution by the turn of the century will be achieved, in part, by the construction of residences heated by virtue of their passive solar designs. These designs are not economically competitive against all conventional fuels in all locations. Some degree of government incentive will be required to assure a competitive position for these designs. A methodology is presented which is used to assess the magnitude of the government incentive required to assure feasi… more

Analysis of general circulation model results and comparison with regional climatic data, Task 3

Description: On time scales of greater than one year the variability of weather and climate on a large path of the Earth is dominated by the Southern Oscillation. While current theories of this phenomenon have clarified the role of the interaction between the ocean and the atmosphere in maintaining this oscillation it has so far been unclear whether the Southern Oscillation originates in the ocean, in the atmosphere or during the interaction between the ocean and the atmosphere. In this study we compared si… more

Simulation model for assessing building energy-conservation policies

Description: A multiple-region simulation model for estimating economic, environmental, and energy-related impacts of building energy-conservation policies is presented. The model is formulated as a time-stepped sequence of optimization subproblems, each reflecting building energy-conservation options and energy costs, and identifying optimal investments and energy consumption for the time step.

Transportation analysis for the concept of regional repositories

Description: Over the past several years, planning associated with the National Waste Terminal Storage (NWTS) program assumed the use of one or two large, centrally located repository facilities. Recently, an alternative approach has been proposed which consists of the use of multiple, smaller regional repositories. In this report, several regional concepts were studied and the transportation requirements for the shipment of spent fuel to the regional repositories were estimated. In general, the transportat… more

Dispersive processes in models of regional radionuclide migration. Technical memorandum

Description: Three broad areas of concern in the development of aquifer scale transport models will be local scale diffusion and dispersion processes, regional scale dispersion processes, and numerical problems associated with the advection-dispersion equation. Local scale dispersion processes are fairly well understood and accessible to observation. These processes will generally be dominated in large scale systems by regional processes, or macro-dispersion. Macro-dispersion is primarily the result of larg… more

Model study of the regional hydrogeologic regime, Roosevelt Hot Springs, Utah

Description: A regional hydrogeologic model is used to investigate the potential for water recharging in the Tushar Mountains to move at depth beneath the Mineral Mountains to discharge in Milford Valley. Simulations carried out over a range of water table positions and assumed depths to a lower impermeable boundary suggest it is unlikely that the topographic configuration alone could drive such a flow system. Specific geologic conditions are necessary if interbasin flow is to occur. However, simulations ba… more
