CDF evidence for the top quark & B physics at Fermilab

Description: We present the first direct evidence for the top quark with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) in a sample of {bar p}p collisions at {radical}s=1.8 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 19.3 pb{sup -1}. The recent B physics results at Fermilab from both collider and fixed target experiments are reviewed.

Decays of the tau lepton

Description: Previous measurements of the branching fractions of the tau lepton result in a discrepancy between the inclusive branching fraction and the sum of the exclusive branching fractions to final states containing one charged particle. Development of the OSO-6 high-energy neutron detector and correlation of measured solar neutron fluxes to solar flares

Evidence of K{sup +} {r_arrow} {pi}{sup +}{nu}{anti {nu}}: The BNL E787 1995 result (How did we get here)

Description: The kaon was studied very thoroughly since its discovery some 50 years ago. In the study of charged kaon branching ratios, it was noticed that K{sup +} {r_arrow} {pi}{sup 0}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e} is allowed while K{sup +} {r_arrow} {pi}{sup +}{nu}{anti {nu}} is not. The latter was then empirically classified as a forbidden decay, leading to the so called strangeness changing current rule. Hadronic- and electromagnetic-cascade discrimination in a thin lead--argon calorimeter

Description: Calculations were carried out to determine methods or a combination of methods for discriminating between high-energy (approximately greater than 15 GeV) hadrons and leptons or photons incident on a thin lead-argon calorimeter. Some of the methods considered involve fluctuations in shower development, the centroid of the shower, and ratios of the pulse height obtained from various locations within the device. Of these, the latter appears the most promising.

Physics at e sup + e sup minus factories

Description: Feasible designs are well advanced for high-luminosity e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} storage rings which produce B{sup 0}{bar B}{sup 0} pairs either at rest or, in what appears to be a more promising option, boosted in the detector frame. Report on 240Am(n,x) surrogate cross section test measurement

Description: The main goal of the test measurement was to determine the feasibility of the {sup 243}Am(p,t) reaction as a surrogate for {sup 240}Am(n,f). No data cross section data exists for neutron induced reactions on {sup 240}Am; the half-life of this isotope is only 2.1 days making direct measurements difficult, if not impossible. Search for Anomalous Production of Multiple Leptons in Association With $W$ and $Z$ Bosons at Cdf

Description: This paper presents a search for anomalous production of multiple low-energy leptons in association with a W or Z boson using events collected at the CDF experiment corresponding to 5.1 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity. This search is sensitive to a wide range of topologies with low-momentum leptons, including those with the leptons near one another. Search for exotic particles at CDF

Description: CDF has searched for 2nd generation leptoquarks, new gauge bosons W{prime} and Z{prime}, axigluons, excited quarks, color octet technirhos and E{sub 6} diquarks. We place the most stringent limits on direct production of these exotic particles.

Search for Neutrino Oscillations at the Brookhaven AGS

Description: We report on a search for neutrino oscillations of the type nu/sub ..mu../ ..-->.. nu/sub e/ in a detector located an effective distance of 96m from the neutrino source in the wide band neutrino beam at the Brookhaven AGS. Search for the top quark in electron-muon events with CDF

Description: The CDF detector has collected data for an integrated luminosity of 4.4 pb{sup {minus}1} during the 1988--89 Tevatron Collider run. This sample has been used to search for the top quark. We report here the results of the analysis of the electron-muon topology. We find that a top mass in the 28 to 72 GeV is excluded at the 95% confidence level. The same limits apply to a possible fourth generation, charge {minus}1/3, b{prime} quark decaying via the charged current. 21 refs., 14 figs.

Search for third generation vector leptoquarks in 1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions

Description: The CDF experiment has searched for production of a third generation vector leptoquark (VLQ3) in the di-tau plus di-jet channel using 322 pb{sup -1} of Run II data. Status of the Fast Focusing DIRC (fDIRC)

Description: We have built and successfully tested a novel particle identification detector concept, the Fast Focusing DIRC (fDIRC). The W boson transverse momentum spectrum in proton-antiproton collisions at radical s = 1. 8 TeV

Description: The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) was used to measure the transverse momentum distribution of W boson produced in proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron collider. The W bosons were identified by the decay W {yields} e{nu}. The results are in good agreement with a next-to-leading order calculation. The cross section for W production with P{sub T} > 50 GeV/c is 423 {plus minus} 58 (stat.) {plus minus} 108 (sys.) pb. 58 refs., 53 figs., 16 tabs.
