Survey of methods for rapid spin reversal

Description: The need for rapid spin reversal technique in polarization experiments is discussed. The ground-state atomic-beam source equipped with two rf transitions for hydrogen can be reversed rapidly, and is now in use on several accelerators. It is the optimum choice provided the accelerator can accept H/sup +/ ions. At present all rapid reversal experiments using H/sup -/ ions are done with Lamb-shift sources; however, this is not a unique choice. Three methods for the reversal of the spin of the atom… more

MODULATION BY IONIC STRENGTH AND SUPERHELICITY OF BENZO[a]PYRENE DIOL EPOXIDE INDUCED DNA ALKYLATION AND UNWINDING

Description: Superhelical and partially relaxed SV40 DNA were reacted in vitro with (+)7{beta}, 8{alpha}-dihydroxy-9{alpha},10{alpha}-epoxy-7,8,9,10-tetrahydrobenzo[a]pyrene (BaP diol epoxide). The modified DNA contained N{sup 2} guanine and N{sup 6} adeninte hydrocarbon adducts in the ratio 86:14. Superhelical SV40 DNA was approximately 6% more susceptible to modification than partially relaxed viral DNA. Counterions inhibited DNA alkylation by up to 90%, Mg{sup 2+} being 50-fold more effective than Na{sup… more
