Separation and Characterization of Coal Derived Components. Quarterly Report, July 1-September 30, 1983

Description: The field-ionization mass spectral hydrocarbon data from F-45 (Wyodak coal-derived SRC) and F-51 (Kentucky 9/14 coal-derived SRC) were recalculated so the various hydrocarbon fractions could be compared directly on a weight percent basis. A computer program was developed which allows the field-ionization mass spectral hydrocarbon data to be compared in a three dimensional fashion. This approach provides for a rapid general comparson of all the field-ionization hydrocarbon data. The solubility o… more

Research on the HYLIFE Liquid-First-Wall Concept for Future Laser-Fusion Reactors

Description: The experiments were designed to simulate the time period between microexplosions. Extrapolating the results of these small-scale experiments to the large-scale lithium jets, we have tentatively concluded that the lithium jets can be re-established after the microexplosion, and with careful design the jets should not breakup due to instabilities during the relatively quiescent period between microexplosions.

Evaluation of oxidation techniques for preparing bioassay and environmental samples for liquid scintillation counting

Description: In environmental and biological monitoring for carbon-14 and tritium, the presence of color and chemical quenching agents in the samples can degrade the efficiency of liquid scintillation counting. A series of experiments was performed to evaluate the usefulness, under routine conditions, of first oxidizing the samples to improve the counting by removing the color and quenching agents. The scintillation counter was calibrated for the effects of quenching agents on its counting efficiency. Oxidi… more

Engineering design of a liquid metal cooled self-pumped limiter for a tokamak reactor

Description: A lithium cooled self-pumped limiter has been designed as the impurity control system for the TPSS high-..beta.. power reactor conceptual design. The limiter removes helium by trapping impinging helium ions in freshly deposited vanadium surface layers in a slot region. No hydrogen is removed and no pumps or vacuum penetrations are used, thereby eliminating penetration shielding and reducing tritium handling. The limiter is composed of a vanadium alloy structure with a 2mm tungsten cladding on t… more

Evaluation of self-interaction parameters from binary phase diagrams

Description: The feasibility of calculating Wagner self-interaction parameters from binary phase diagrams was examined. The self-interaction parameters of 22 non-ferrous liquid solutions were calculated utilizing an equation based on the equality of the chemical potentials of a component in two equilibrium phases. Utilization of the equation requires the evaluation of the first and second derivatives of various liquidus and solidus data at infinite dilution of the solute component. Several numerical methods… more
