Electrical Substation Reliability Evaluation with Emphasis on Evolving Interdependence on Communication Infrastructure

Description: This study developed a probabilistic methodology for assessment of the reliability and security of electrical energy distribution networks. This included consideration of the future grid system, which will rely heavily on the existing digitally based communication infrastructure for monitoring and protection. Event tree and fault tree methods were utilized. The approach extensively modeled the types of faults that a grid could potentially experience, the response of the grid, and the specific d… more

Effects of WENO flux reconstruction order and spatial resolution on reshocked two-dimensional Richtmyer-Meshkov instability

Description: Weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) simulations of the reshocked two-dimensional single-mode Richtmyer-Meshkov instability using third-, fifth- and ninth-order spatial flux reconstruction and uniform grid resolutions corresponding to 128, 256 and 512 points per initial perturbation wavelength are presented. The dependence of the density, vorticity, simulated density Schlieren and baroclinic production fields, mixing layer width, circulation deposition, mixing profiles, production and mi… more

Particle Simulations of a Linear Dielectric Wall Proton Accelerator

Description: The dielectric wall accelerator (DWA) is a compact induction accelerator structure that incorporates the accelerating mechanism, pulse forming structure, and switch structure into an integrated module. The DWA consists of stacked stripline Blumlein assemblies, which can provide accelerating gradients in excess of 100 MeV/meter. Blumleins are switched sequentially according to a prescribed acceleration schedule to maintain synchronism with the proton bunch as it accelerates. A finite difference … more

Development of a Multi-Layer Guided Wave Inspection Technique

Description: This study investigates the inspection of a particular layer of a multi-layer structure using ultrasonic guided waves. Techniques based on Lamb waves have been developed for the inspection of plate structures and are well understood. Guided waves also exist in multi-layered plates as well. Energy distributions vary across the thickness of a multi-layer structure depending on the mode and frequency. Hence, a potential way to inspect the bottom layer of a structure is to find modes with sufficien… more

Applications of Laser and Synchrotron Based ARPES to Photocathode Research

Description: Laser angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) provides unique information about angle and energy distribution of photoelectrons. Laser ARPES gives unique insight into how NEA materials work. ARPES combined with some ancillary measurements gives a very complete picture of system electronic physics. For H:C[100] there is now a clear program for engineering as well as development analogous systems. ARPES well suited for identifying 'ideal' photocathodes with intrinsically low emittance a… more

Subsurface Shielding Source Term Specification Calculation

Description: The purpose of this calculation is to establish appropriate and defensible waste-package radiation source terms for use in repository subsurface shielding design. This calculation supports the shielding design for the waste emplacement and retrieval system, and subsurface facility system. The objective is to identify the limiting waste package and specify its associated source terms including source strengths and energy spectra. Consistent with the Technical Work Plan for Subsurface Design Sect… more

Oxygen-induced reactions at 60 A GeV and 200 A GeV studied by calorimetry

Description: Results based on calorimetric measurements are presented from reactions of 60 A GeV and 200 A GeV /sup 16/O projectiles with C, Cu, Ag, and Au nuclei. Minimum-bias cross sections are discussed. Energy spectra measured at zero degrees and transverse-energy distributions for the pseudorapidity range 2.4 less than or equal to eta less than or equal to 5.5 are shown. An analysis of the average transverse energy in terms of the number of participating nucleons and the number of binary nucleon-nucleo… more

Incoherent scattering of gamma rays by K-shell electrons. [Differential cross sections, 145 to 662 KeV]

Description: Differential cross sections for incoherent scattering by K-shell electrons were measured, using coincidence techniques, for incident photons having energies of 662 keV, 320 keV, and 145 keV. The spectral distributions of the scattered photons emerging at scattering angles from 20/sup 0/ to about 140/sup 0/ are reported. Target materials were iron, tin, holmium, and gold at 320 keV; tin and gold at 662 keV; and iron and tin at 145 keV. A typical energy spectrum consists of a scattered peak that … more
