Enhanced durability and reactivity for zinc ferrite desulfurization sorbent

Description: AMAX Research Development Center (AMAX R D) has been investigating methods for enhancing the reactivity and durability of the zinc ferrite desulfurization sorbent. Zinc ferrite sorbents are intended for use in desulfurization of hot coal gas in integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) or molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) applications. For the present program, the reactivity of the sorbent may be defined as its sulfur sorption capacity at the breakthrough point and at saturation in a bench-… more

Development of Improved Iron-Aluminide Filter Tubes and Elements

Description: The purpose of this Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) was to explore and develop advanced manufacturing techniques to fabricate sintered iron-aluminide intermetallic porous bodies used for gas filtration so as to reduce production costs while maintaining or improving performance in advanced coal gasification and combustion systems. The use of a power turbine fired with coal-derived synthesis gas requires some form of gas cleaning in order to protect turbine and downstream c… more

Development of the Low Swirl Injector for Fuel-Flexible Gas Turbines

Description: Industrial gas turbines are primarily fueled with natural gas. However, changes in fuel cost and availability, and a desire to control carbon dioxide emissions, are creating pressure to utilize other fuels. There is an increased interest in the use of fuels from coal gasification, such as syngas and hydrogen, and renewable fuels, such as biogas and biodiesel. Current turbine fuel injectors have had years of development to optimize their performance with natural gas. The new fuels appearing on t… more

Hydrogen Production by Water Dissociation Using Ceramic Membranes - Annual Report for FY 2010.

Description: The objective of this project is to develop dense ceramic membranes that can produce hydrogen via coal/coal gas-assisted water dissociation without using an external power supply or circuitry. This project grew from an effort to develop a dense ceramic membrane for separating hydrogen from gas mixtures such as those generated during coal gasification, methane partial oxidation, and water-gas shift reactions. That effort led to the development of various cermet (i.e., ceramic/metal composite) me… more

Scale-Up of Advanced Hot-Gas Desulfurization Sorbents

Description: The overall objective of this project is to develop regenerable sorbents for hot gas desulfurization in IGCC systems. The specific objective of the project is to develop durable advanced sorbents that demonstrate a strong resistance to attrition and chemical deactivation, and high activity at temperatures as low as 343 C (650 F). A number of formulations will be prepared and screened in a 1/2-inch fixed bed reactor at high pressure (1 to 20 atm) and high temperatures using simulated coal-derive… more

Industrial Fuel Gas Demonstration-Plant Program. Plans for use and disposition of by-products. Final report (Deliverable No. 29)

Description: The purpose of this report is to summarize Phase I efforts for marketing by-products from the Industrial Fuel Gas Demonstration Plant (IFGDP). The scope of inquiry over the last year was not intended to be intensive, but rather to conduct a thorough preliminary investigation to define the marketing parameters and potential revenue available from the sale of plant by-products. The first section discusses the impact of by-product revenue on plant economics and potential for local area development… more

Hydrogen Separation Membranes Annual Report for FY 2010.

Description: The objective of this work is to develop dense ceramic membranes for separating hydrogen from other gaseous components in a nongalvanic mode, i.e., without using an external power supply or electrical circuitry. The goal of this project is to develop dense hydrogen transport membranes (HTMs) that nongalvanically (i.e., without electrodes or external power supply) separate hydrogen from gas mixtures at commercially significant fluxes under industrially relevant operating conditions. These membra… more

Technical review of entrained design report

Description: Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) is planning to expand its in-house coal gasification R&D capabilities by installing a research facility that can address a number of concepts including entrained, fluid bed, and catalytic gasification and flash pyrolysis. This Advanced Gasification Concepts (AGC) facility design, as it currently stands, includes piping and instrumentation diagrams, vessel drawings and specifications, instrumentation lists and specifications, and equipment layout and is… more

Catalysts for upgrading coal-derived liquids. Quarterly report, October 1-December 31, 1980

Description: A linear relationship represents the hydrogenation activity decay of catalysts used in four experimental runs reported previously. The weight percent hydrogen in the reactor product oils plotted against oil-catalyst contact time for experimental runs ZBB, ZBC, ZBD, and ZBE reveals a linear decay rate of 0.0083 wt% hydrogen per hour. This is one quantitative measure of catalyst activity decay. The data for the plot incorporate three different catalysts or combinations used to process a PAMCO liq… more
