Leaching characteristics of actinides from simulated reactor waste, Part 2. [Borosilicate glass]

Description: Leach rates for /sup 237/Np and /sup 239/Pu are investigated with a single-pass leaching system. The factorial experimental design uses several combinations of solution composition and flow rate, and two temperatures, 25 and 75/sup 0/C. The 25/sup 0/C results are compared with those from a modified IAEA procedure. At 25/sup 0/C, leach rates decrease with time. Agreement between results from the single-pass and modified IAEA methods is fair with WIPP brine leachant, good with NaHCO/sub 3/, and g… more

Nuclear performance optimization of the molten-salt fusion breeder

Description: Improved nuclear analysis, including the treatment of resonance and spatial self-shielding, coupled with an optimization procedure, has resulted in an improved performance estimate for the molten salt blanket. Net U-233 breeding ratio ranges between 0.58 and 0.63, and blanket energy multiplication ranges between 1.8 and 1.9.

Feasibility study of a fission supressed blanket for a tandem-mirror hybrid reactor

Description: A study of fission suppressed blankets for the tandem mirror not only showed such blankets to be feasible but also to be safer than fissioning blankets. Such hybrids could produce enough fissile material to support up to 17 light water reactors of the same nuclear power rating. Beryllium was compared to /sup 7/Li for neutron multiplication; both were considered feasible but the blanket with Li produced 20% less fissile fuel per unit of nuclear power in the reactor. The beryllium resource, while… more

Renovation of the hot press in the Plutonium Experimental Facility

Description: The Plutonium Experimental Facility (PEF) will be used to develop a new fuel pellet fabrication process and to evaluate equipment upgrades. The facility was used from 1978 until 1982 to optimize the parameters for fuel pellet production using a process which was developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The PEF was shutdown and essentially abandoned until mid-1987 when the facility renovations were initiated by the Actinide Technology Section (ATS) of SRL. A major portion of the renovation w… more

Cell specific radiation dosimetry in skeleton from life-span carcinogenesis studies

Description: The osteogenic sarcoma is the dominant life-threatening pathology in lifespan studies of beagles exposed to alpha-emitting bone-seeking radionuclides. It was deduced from these studies that certain skeletal sites are more prone to develop tumors. This project sought to determine the bone cells at risk and their cell-specific radiation dose. The cell-specific radiation dose values are related to loss and high Ra-226 and Pu-239 induced osteogenic sarcoma sites, to test different dose response hyp… more

Reaction cross-section calculations using new experimental and theoretical level structure data for deformed nuclei

Description: A technique for modeling quasiparticle excitation energies and rotational parameters in odd-odd deformed nuclei has been used to construct sets of discrete states with energy 0 to 1.5 MeV in /sup 176/Lu and /sup 236/Np. These data were used as part of the input for calculation of isomer production cross-section ratios in the /sup 175/Lu(n,..gamma..)/sup 176/Lu and /sup 237/Np(n,2n)/sup 236/Np reactions. In order to achieve agreement with experiment, it has been found necessary to include in the… more

Source of high activity levels recently observed from shipping containers and transfer cans

Description: Shipping cans containing product from plant runs completed in the latter half of April and in May showed, in general, definitely higher levels of radiation than had been observed previously. Likewise, containers for the transfer of the F-10-P solution from the 224 Bldg. to 231 Bldg. (during May) exhibited higher radiation levels than could be attributed to higher power levels and increased batch sizes. These higher radiation levels were indicative that some radioactive element (or elements) was… more
