Using Beam Echo Effect for Generation of Short-Wavelength Radiation

Description: We propose to use an echo effect previously observed in hadron accelerators for up-frequency conversion of density modulation in an electron beam. We show that, for generation of high harmonics, this method is much more efficient in comparison with the currently used approach. A one dimensional model of the effect is developed which allows to optimize the amplitude of the modulation for a given harmonic number.

Overview of Phase Space Manipulations of Relativistic Electron Beams

Description: Phase space manipulation is a process to rearrange beam's distribution in 6-D phase space. In this paper, we give an overview of the techniques for tailoring beam distribution in 2D, 4D, and 6D phase space to meet the requirements of various applications. These techniques become a new focus of accelerator physics R&D and very likely these advanced concepts will open up new opportunities in advanced accelerators and the science enabled by them.

Comparison of Carbon and Hi-Z Primary Collimators for the LHC Phase II Collimation System

Description: A current issue with the LHC collimation system is single-diffractive, off-energy protons from the primary collimators that pass completely through the secondary collimation system and are absorbed immediately downbeam in the cold magnets of the dispersion suppressor section. Simulations suggest that the high impact rate could result in quenching of these magnets. We have studied replacing the 60 cm primary graphite collimators, which remove halo mainly by inelastic strong interactions, with 5.… more

Single-Particle Dynamics in Electron Storage Rings with Extremely Low Emittance

Description: Electron storage rings are widely used for high luminosity colliders, damping rings in high-energy linear colliders, and synchrotron light sources. They have become essential facilities to study high-energy physics and material and medical sciences. To further increase the luminosity of colliders or the brightness of synchrotron light sources, the beam emittance is being continually pushed downward, recently to the nanometer region. In the next decade, another order of reduction is expected. Th… more

Improving LER Coupling and PEP-II Luminosity with Model-Independent Analysis

Description: The PEP-II storage ring at SLAC houses electrons (in the High-Energy Ring, or HER) and positrons (in the Low-Energy Ring, or LER) for collision. The goal of this project was to improve the linear optics of the LER in order to decrease coupling, thereby decreasing emittance and increasing luminosity. To do this, we first took turn by turn BPM (Beam Position Monitor) data of a single positron bunch at two betatron resonance excitations, extracted orbits from this data using Model-Independent Anal… more
