Control of closed orbit deviation due to synchrotron radiation

Description: The energy loss by synchrotron radiation in electron-positron storage rings occurs in every bending magnet and is thus distributed around the ring, while the energy gain occurs at the rf cavities, which are usually lumped in only a few locations. This type of orbit distortion is usually negligibly small compared to the design allowance in existing synchrotrons and storage rings; however, in the case of the larger storage rings now being contemplated, the distortion can be substantial in compari… more

System for obtaining longitudinal beam polarization at PEP with vertical dipoles located outside of the interaction region

Description: An initial study of a beam polarization system was made: a ''first look'' at the configuration, not an optimized design. The feasibility of a system in which the large spin rotation magnets are located outside the IR (interaction region) is discussed. The system can, in principle, be turned on or off to allow conventional operation of PEP or operation with the SRS (spin rotation system). Operation over a wide energy range also appears possible without moving magnets, with only a relatively smal… more

Technical progress report, October 1, 1974--September 30, 1975. [Dept. of Physics, Univ. of Wisconsin]

Description: The study of the scattering of polarized deuterons yielded improved optical potentials, particularly spin--orbit and tensor potentials. Extensive measurements of vector and tensor analyzing powers for (d,p), (d,n), and (d,t) reactions corrected several J/sup ..pi../ assignments, revealed deficiencies in DWBA calculations, showed some interesting systematics, gave evidence for two-step processes, and demonstrated important deuteron D-state effects. New vector and tensor polarimeters permitted ro… more

Initial experience in ion production using an ultra-high power density method

Description: A mechanism to adjust the cross-section of the arc column of a cold cathode P.I.G. ion source was developed. The cross-section of the plasma column, and therefore the electron flux density, can be adjusted over a wide range with a fixed ion source power. Arc columns of up to about 370 kW/cm/sup 2/ and about 140 kW/cm/sup 3/ were achieved. With this ultra-high power density, a great improvement on ion production was obtained. The peak beam currents of the doubly charged He-3 and He-4 were increa… more

Neutral particle production in pi- d reactions at 200 GeV/c

Description: Characteristics of {pi}{sup o} production and K{sup o}, {Lambda}, {bar {Lambda}}, production in {pi}{sup -}d interactions at 200 GeV are presented. The data are obtained from a 70,000 picture exposure of the FNAL 30-inch deuterium-filled bubble chamber. Comparison with pion proton data at similar energies and pion deuterium data at lower energies are made.

Bubble-Chamber Study of Dimuon Production by Neutrinos Using the Phase-2 EMI and a Dichromatic Beam

Description: The authors propose to examine in detail, using the 15-foot bubble chamber and an improved (Phase II) EMI, the characteristics of 'dimuon' events produced by neutrinos. A light neon-hydrogen filling (30% neon atoms) provides adequate target mass, good track measurements, and high detection efficiency for photons and electrons. Thus e-{mu} and e-e dileptons, as well as dimuons, can be observed with good efficiency. They estimate a yield of 100 detected dimuons in a 200 K picture expoture. They a… more

Search for New Phenomena Associated with High Energy Neutrinos Using the Quadrupole Triplet Beam

Description: The authors propose to take one million pictures of high energy neutrinos in an approximately 20% mixture of Neon and Helium using the FNAL 15 foot bubble chamber exposed to the quadrupole triplet focused neutrino beam with the EMI. Their experience in E-28A has shown that the capability of recording and analyzing high multiplicity, multiple gamma conversions, secondary neutron interactions, and high energy electrons makes this instrument uniquely useful in searching for new phenomena in neutri… more

A Study of Inclusive Proton Polarization

Description: The authors propose to measure the polarization of the outgoing proton in the inclusive reaction p + p {yields} p {up_arrow} + X in the region .98 > x{sub R} > .6. The measurements would include beam momenta from p{sub LAB} = 50 GeV/c to p{sub LAB} = 400 GeV/c at t = -.3 (GeV/c){sup 2}, -.8 (GeV/c){sup 2}, -1.4 (GeV/c){sup 2}, and -3.0 (GeV/c){sup 2} over the range .6 < x{sub F} < .95. The experiment would use the existing E313 polarimeter and internal target spectrometer.

Search for Mu's K(0)'s or Characteristic Hadron Signatures and Masses in Coincidence with Single Directly Produced Electrons

Description: The authors propose to investigate the anomalous production of leptons in hadron reactions using the FNAL cyclotron magnet facility in conjunction with a direct electron trigger. The large aperture of the magnet plus the existing detector array will make it possible to study the topology of the anomalous events for distinctive signatures such as invariant mass peaks or accompanying {mu}'s or K{sup o}'s. The use of an electron trigger instead of a muon trigger allows better offline noise suppres… more

Proposal to Study Dilepton Neutrino Interactions with the Triplet Quadrupole Beam, the Phase 1 EMI, and the 15' Bubble Chamber Filled with a H-Ne Mixture

Description: The authors propose to study dilepton neutrino events in the 15-foot bubble chamber using the quadrupole beam. The chamber is filled with at least 80% neon (15 ton fiducial target), the EMI is rearranged into 2 planes to give at least 7 absorption lengths for muon identification and give time coincidence, and the beam has a 1 millisecond spill. This will give about 150 dimuon events and 150 muon electron events per 100,000 pictures. They request 200,000 pictures.

Photoproduction Experiment at Fermilab

Description: The authors propose to continue and extend the program of photoproduction and pair production studies currently being carried out in Experiment E-87. The goals of the physics program they propose are: (1) to look for {mu}{sup {+-}}+e{sup {-+}}{nu}'s final states; (2) to study the mass spectra of hadronic final states which are produced in association with a single charged lepton (electron or muon); and (3) to determine the properties of a selected number of photoproduced multi-body hadronic fin… more

Measurement of the Kaon Form Factor

Description: The authors propose an experiment to measure elastic kaon scattering from electrons at a beam energy of 250 GeV. This measurement provides the first experimental value for the charge radius of the kaon. The anticipated error on the determination of the radius is 0.03 Fermi. The experiment can be performed by the present E216 spectrometer in the M1 beam line. A drift chamber system will be added to improve the spectrometer resolution and minor modifications of the trigger hodoscope and shower co… more

A Proposal to Continue Measurements of Direct Muon Production in the Forward Direction

Description: The authors recently have measured the direct muon production in the forward direction at small p{perpendicular} and find a large direct muon to pion ratio. At x = 0.3 the ratio is {mu}{sup -}/{pi}{sup -} = 1.83 {+-} 0.43 x 10{sup -4} for negatives and {mu}{sup +}/{pi}{sup +} = 6.4 {+-} 1.3 x 10{sup -5} for positives. The direct production of {mu}{sup +} and {mu}{sup -} are equal although the {pi}{sup +}/{pi}{sup -} ratios is large. They propose to continue these measurements and extend them to… more

Experiment to Measure Deep Inelastic Electron Scattering on Hydrogen and Deuterium with Seperation of Nu(W)(2) and W(1) Nucleon Structure Functions, at the Highest Fermilab Energies and Q(2) Regions

Description: The authors propose to measure the inclusive deep inelastic electron-nucleon scattering cross sections on hydrogen and deuterium. Cross sections will be measured in the range of momentum transfers Q{sub min}{sup 2} = 0.160 (GeV/c){sup 2} and Q{sub max}{sup 2} = 160.0 (GeV/c){sup 2}, in the range of recoil hadronic mass squared of W{sub min}{sup 2} = 2 GeV{sup 2} and W{sub max}{sup 2} = 450 GeV{sup 2}. Mathematical models and algorithms for the computer program 'WOLF'

Description: The computer program FLOW finds the nonrelativistic self- consistent set of two-dimensional ion trajectories and electric fields (including space charges from ions and electrons) for a given set of initial and boundary conditions for the particles and fields. The combination of FLOW with the optimization code PISA gives the program WOLF, which finds the shape of the emitter which is consistent with the plasma forming it, and in addition varies physical characteristics such as electrode position… more
