Seminoe-Kortes transmission line/substation consolidation project, Carbon County, Wyoming

Description: The existing switchyards at Western Area Power Administration's (WESTERN) Seminoe and Kortes facilities, located approximately 40 miles northeast of Rawlines, Carbon County, Wyoming, were constructed in 1939 and 1951, respectively. The circuit breakers at these facilities are beyond or approaching their service life and need to be replaced. In addition, the switchyards have poor access for maintenance and replacement of equipment, and their locations create potential for oil spills into the Nor… more

Improved Computational Schemes for the Numerical Modeling of Hydrothermal Resources in Wyoming

Description: A new method, the Conjugate Gradient Squared (CGS) solution technique, is shown to be extremely effective when applied to the finite-difference solution of conductive and convective heat transfer in geologic systems. The CGS method is compared to the Successive Over/Under Relaxation schemes, a version of the Gaussian elimination method, and the Generalized Minimum Residual (GMRES) approach. The CGS procedure converges at least ten times faster than the nearest competitor. The model is applied t… more

Effect of the Operation of Kerr and Hungry Horse Dams on the Reproductive Success of Kokanee in the Flathead System; Technical Addendum to the Final Report.

Description: This addendum to the Final Report presents results of research on the zooplankton and fish communities of Flathead Lade. The intent of the Study has been to identify the impacts of hydroelectric operations at Kerr and Hungry Horse Dam on the reproductive success of kokanee an to propose mitigation for these impacts. Recent changes in the trophic ecology of the lake, have reduced the survival of kokanee. In the last three year the Study has been redirected to identify, if possible, the biologica… more

Hoe Creek Groundwater Restoration, 1989

Description: During the summer of 1989, approximately 6.5 million gallons of contaminated groundwater were pumped from 23 wells at the Hoe Creek underground coal gasification site, near Gillette, Wyoming. The organic contaminants were removed using activated carbon before the water was sprayed on 15.4 acres at the sites. Approximately 2647 g (5.8 lb) of phenols and 10,714 g (23.6 lb) of benzene were removed from the site aquifers. Phenols, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and naphthalene concentrations were … more

Methane formation and retention in coal

Description: The methane content of coal seams in Utah and Colorado will be measured in situ as well as in the laboratory and correlated with the geological and geochemical history of the seams and surrounding strata. Chemical and physical properties will be measured in the laboratory for coals that obtain methane and coals of similar rank which do not contain methane. Methane yields on pyrolysis will be used to measure the propensity of coals to form additional methane. Methane formation and retention will… more

Solvent Extraction of Southern U.S. Tar Sands

Description: The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Arkansas, in association with Diversified Petroleum Recovery, Inc. (DPR) of Little Rock, Arkansas, has been developing a solvent extraction process for the recovery of bitumen from tar sands for the past five years. The unique feature of the process is that the bitumen is recovered from the solvent by contacting with a co-solvent, which causes the bitumen to precipitate. The overall purpose of this project is to study both the technica… more

Processes of community development and responses of ecosystems to climate change

Description: Our studies focus on attempting to understand the role of decomposer-primary producer linkages in successional dynamics. We are testing a series of hypotheses that relate changes in plant species composition during succession to changes in activity and structure of the soil microfloral and faunal community, dynamics of soil organic matter, and availability of soil nutrients. As these successional patterns are identified, they are being applied to understanding specific processes and mechanics i… more

Evaluation of health risks associated with proposed ground water standards at selected inactive uranium mill-tailings sites

Description: The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed ground water standards applicable to all inactive uranium mill-tailings sites. The proposed standards include maximum concentration limits (MCL) for currently regulated drinking water contaminants, as well as the addition of standards for molybdenum, uranium, nitrate, and radium-226 plus radium-228. The proposed standards define the point of compliance to be everywhere downgradient of the tailings pile, and require ground water remediati… more

Northern Arizona Basin Study (NABS), 1989

Description: An experiment was conducted to better understand a frequent layer of northwest winds found in the Northern Arizona region. This layer has been observed most often in winter near the surface at Page, Arizona, and often opposes larger scale upper level west winds. The results of this experiment improved both the temporal and the down-valley spatial resolution of the flow structure in this region during winter. 11 refs., 9 figs.
