Interim Report Johnston Splined Shaft Deepwell Turbine Pump

Description: The deepwell turbine pumps employed in HAPO Separations Plants have, in general, given good service. However, they do have design weaknesses that were originally recognized as undesirable but which were accepted as a matter of expediency. In an effort to improve reliability and extend life expectancies of such pumps, development work has continued. This report describes the design and preliminary test results obtained with a deepwell turbine pump of improved design.

Stability of Chromel-Alumel Thermocouples in Carbon Dioxide at 1000°C

Description: Tests on twenty identically prepared 26 gauge Chromel-Alumel thermocouples have been completed. It appears that wires of this material without protection are unsatisfactory mechanically and thermoelectrically for service in atmospheres of CO₂ at 1000°C.

Some Control Properties of Reflector Moderated Reactors

Description: The current trend in the design of research reactors is toward heavily loaded cores in which most of the neutrons are thermalized in the reflector before returning to the core. These reactors often have control properties quite different than the usual thermal reactors. In this paper some of these properties are examined and it is shown that extreme care must be used in the design of such reactors.

Electroplating on Zirconium

Description: A two-etchant surface preparation treatment has been found which insures good adhesion between the zirconium and the nickel or copper electroplate. The etching process requires 1 1/2 minutes.

Gamma Photometer Use for Nondestructive Determination of Uranium Content of Enriched "C" Slugs

Description: it is desired to know the accuracy and precision of uranium content determination with the γ-photometer. Several possible sources of error (involving both bias and variability) arise when the problem is fully considered. As analysis of data collected for the evaluation of this technique has progressed, there has been a continued discovery of new sources of error and bias further complicating this evaluation. These possible sources have not yet all been systematically examined and thus a complet… more

A Study of the Fabrication Failures for Zirconium and Zircaloy-2 Process Tubes and of the Annealing and Cold Rolling of Zircaloy-2

Description: A study of the fabrication failures for zirconium and zircaloy-2 process tubes was made. In the tube reducing operation, a non-uniform reduction in area for the cross section was found to be a major cause of failure. In annealing studies, a cycle of 2 hours at 820 deg C in vacuum followed by furnace cooling produced the greatest ductility of extruded zircaloy-2 for the annealing treatments studied. The ductility of cold worked and annealed zircaloy-2 was found to be superior to that of extruded… more

Metallurgical Examination of Resistance Thermometer Elements Removed from 105 KW and KE Areas

Description: This examination was conducted primarily to determine the extent of corrosion existing between the silver bearing alloy and the type 416 stainless steel nut of K reactor units subjected to service conditions and also to establish irrevocably that metallurgical defects exist in the brazes.

In-link Alpha Monitor Prototype Performance

Description: This report summarizes the operational experience and the data obtained on the 2AW Purex type process stream. The performance of an in-line alpha monitor for continuously monitoring Plutonium in Purex Process waste streams is described. The instrument has a lower limit of measurement of 1 x 10⁻⁶ grams of Plutonium per liter and can measure concentrations as high as 7.9 x 10⁻² grams/liter.

Hydraulic Instability In a Natural Circulation Loop With Wet Steam Generation at 1000 PSIA

Description: Experimental test loops have been used to study the problem of hydraulic stability. The oscillatory behavior of a single-phase and two-phase natural circulation loop has been examined at atmospheric pressures and oscillating modes of operation were studied in terms of heat input.

Nuclear Safety Consideration For Continuous Ion Exchange Column Design

Description: Considerable interest has been shown at HAPO in the development of a continuous ion exchange process for concentrating plutonium solutions. Development work has been performed on continuous ion exchange for both uranium and plutonium concentrations at the X-10 at ORNL. On a recent trip to Oak Ridge to discuss critical mass problems and experiments with Dr. A. D. Callihan of the ORNL critical mass facility, a meeting was also held with C. W. Hancher and R. Higgins of X-10 regarding continuous io… more

Physics Calculations for the Consumers Big Rock Point Process Computer

Description: The physics calculations to be performed on the Consumers On-Line Process Computer are reported. As a result of these calculations, a three-dimensional power shape is simulated, a reactivity balance is approximated, and the neutron exposure of each third of fuel bundle and control rod are accumulated. The work was reported as a part of the Consumers Research and Development Program.
