Description: During the past year the coupling between the translational and rotational potential energy in solid and liquid CO/sub 2/ was confirmed by measurements on the similar molecule N/sub 2/O. Vapor pressures of /sup 15/N/sup 14/N/sup 16/O, /sup 14/N/sup 15/N/sup 16/O, and /sup 14/N/sup 14/N/sup 18/O have been measured over the range 143 to 182/sup 0/ in the solid and 182 to 219/sup 0/ in the liquid. The liquid data fulfill the requirement that the shift in the internal vibrational energies from the … more

An Economic Evaluation of Ultimate Disposal of Liquid Radioactive Wastes by the Fluidized Bed Calcination Process

Description: The costs of fluidized bed calcining of the acidic and re-acidified forms of Purex and Thorex wastes were determined. The wastes were assumed produced by a chemical-processing plant recovering unburned fuel from 1500 tons/ yr of U converter fuel at a burnup of 10,000 Mwd/ton and 270 tons/yr of Th converter fuel at 20,000 Mwd/ton. Also, investment costs for storage of the calcine in vented, air cooled, annular bins installed in underground concrete valuts were determined. The cost of fluidized b… more

Flash hydropyrolysis of coal. Quarterly report No. 3, July 1, 1977--September 30, 1977

Description: The program is designed to study the process variables and chemistry of the Flash Hydropyrolysis Process, a rapid gas-phase, non-catalytic coal hydrogenation technique developed at BNL. The equipment used is a 1 lb/hr unit utilizing a 1 inch down flow tubular reactor designed to operate at up to 4000 psi and 800/sup 0/C. This equipment has been in operation for more than a year with only one problem. All the data to date on product yield as a function of temperature and hydrogen pressure is cor… more

(Synchrotron studies of x-ray reflectivity from surfaces)

Description: Following a long period of theoretical interest, but only limited measurements, there has recently been an increased number of attempts to expand the relative paucity of experimental information on the structure of liquid surfaces using techniques as diverse as ellipsometry, micro-force balances, non-linear optics, Auger and photoelectron spectroscopy, and x-ray scattering. Our group has played a leading role in the currently expanding application of scattering techniques to the general problem… more

Phase behavior of coal fluids: Data for correlation development

Description: The effective design and operation of processes for conversion of coal to fluid fuels requires accurate knowledge of the phase behavior of the fluid mixtures encountered in the conversion process. The overall objective of the author's work is to develop accurate predictive methods for representation of vapor-liquid equilibria in systems encountered in coal conversion processes. The objectives of the present project include: (1) measurements of binary vapor-liquid phase behavior data for selecte… more

Procedure for matching synfuel users with potential suppliers. Appendix B. Proposed and ongoing synthetic fuel production projects

Description: To assist the Department of Energy, Office of Fuels Conversion (OFC), in implementing the synthetic fuel exemption under the Powerplant and Industrial Fuel Use Act (FUA) of 1978, Resource Consulting Group, Inc. (RCG), has developed a procedure for matching prospective users and producers of synthetic fuel. The matching procedure, which involves a hierarchical screening process, is designed to assist OFC in: locating a supplier for a firm that wishes to obtain a synthetic fuel exemption; determi… more

Procedure for matching synfuel users with potential suppliers. Final report

Description: A procedure has been developed for matching prospective users and producers of synthetic fuels. The matching procedure, which involves a hierarchical screening process, is designed to assist OFC in: locating a supplier for a firm that wishes to obtain synthetic fuel exemption (Fuel Use Act); determining whether the fuel supplier proposed by a petitioner is technically and economically capable of meeting the petitioner's needs; and assisting the Synthetic Fuels Corporation in evaluating pot… more

Prototype spent-fuel canister design, analysis, and test

Description: Sandia National Laboratories was asked by the US Energy Research and Development Administration (now US Department of Energy) to design the spent fuel shipping cask system for the Clinch River Breeder Reactor Plant (CRBRP). As a part of this task, a canister which holds liquid sodium and the spent fuel assembly was designed, analyzed, and tested. The canister body survived the regulatory Type-B 9.1-m (30-ft) drop test with no apparent leakage. However, the commercially available metal seal used… more

Literature search for the non-aqueous separation of zinc from fuel rod cladding. [After dissolution in liquid metal]

Description: This report reviews the literature of processes for the nonaqueous separation of zinc from dissolved fuel assembly cladding. The processes considered were distillation, pyrochemical processing, and electrorefining. The last two techniques were only qualitatively surveyed while the first, distillation, was surveyed in detail. A survey of available literature from 1908 through 1978 on the distillation of zinc was performed. The literature search indicated that a zinc recovery rate in excess of 95… more

Engineering design of a liquid metal cooled self-pumped limiter for a tokamak reactor

Description: A lithium cooled self-pumped limiter has been designed as the impurity control system for the TPSS high-..beta.. power reactor conceptual design. The limiter removes helium by trapping impinging helium ions in freshly deposited vanadium surface layers in a slot region. No hydrogen is removed and no pumps or vacuum penetrations are used, thereby eliminating penetration shielding and reducing tritium handling. The limiter is composed of a vanadium alloy structure with a 2mm tungsten cladding on t… more
