Fundamental studies of catalytic processing of synthetic liquids. Quarterly progress report, October 1, 1991--December 31, 1991

Description: This project revolves around understanding the fundamental processes involved in the catalytic removal of harmful oxygenated organics present in coal liquids. We are modelling the complex type of sulfided Mo catalyst proposed for these reactions with simple single crystal surfaces. These display a controlled range and number of reaction sites and can be extensively characterized by surface science techniques. We then investigate the reaction pathways for representative simple oxygenates upon th… more

Moist air reaction with excess UF{sub 6}

Description: The moist air reaction with uranium hexafluoride (UF{sub 6}) has been studied at conditions simulating UF{sub 6} hydrolysis during air inleakage in the cascade. In excess UF{sub 6}, the reaction mechanism is more complicated than predicted by the simple gas-phase reaction of one UF{sub 6} molecule with two water molecules to form uranyl fluoride and hydrogen fluoride. The initial UF{sub 6} consumption is significantly greater than predicted, suggesting that a metastable uranium compound is form… more

Isobutanol-methanol mixtures from synthesis gas. Quarterly technical progress report, 1 April--30 June 30 1996

Description: A series of CuMgCeO{sub x} catalysts have been prepared by coprecipitating the corresponding metal nitrates with a mixed solution of potassium carbonate and potassium hydroxide. Kinetic studies of methanol and ethanol coupling reactions on K-Cu/MgO/CeO{sub 2} and MgO/CeO{sub 2} catalysts indicate that Cu enhances the rates of alcohol dehydrogenation. The cross-coupling reactions of acetaldehyde and {sup 13}C-labeled methanol produce singly-labeled propionaldehyde, suggesting that it forms by th… more

Improving electronic structure methods to predict nano-optoelectronics and nano-catalyst functions.

Description: This report focuses on quantum chemistry and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations applied to elucidate the mechanism of the multi-step, 2-electron, electrochemical reduction of the green house gas molecule carbon dioxide (CO{sub 2}) to carbon monoxide (CO) in aqueous media. When combined with H{sub 2} gas to form synthesis ('syn') gas, CO becomes a key precursor to methane, methanol, and other useful hydrocarbon products. To elucidate the mechanism of this reaction, we apply computa… more

Probe molecule studies: Active species in alcohol synthesis. Quarterly report No. 6, January 1992--March 1992

Description: The goal of this research is to develop a better understanding of the mechanisms of formation of alcohols and other oxygenates from syngas over supported catalysts. Probe molecules will be added in situ during the reaction to help delineate reaction pathways and identify reaction intermediate species. The key of our study is to investigate how the species generated by these probe molecules interact with surface species present during oxygenate formation.

Semiconductor electrochemistry of coal pyrite. Technical progress report, October--December 1992

Description: This project seeks to advance the fundamental understanding of the physics-chemical processes occurring at the pyrite/aqueous interface, in the context of coal cleaning, coal desulfurization, and acid minedrainage. A novel approach to the study of pyrite aqueous electrochemistry is proposed, based on the use of both synthetic and natural ( i.e. coal-derived) pyrite specimens, the utilization of.pyrite both in the form of micro (i.e. colloidal and subcolloidal) and macro (i.e. rotating ring disk… more

Early events in radiation chemistry and in photoionization

Description: Real-time studies of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons by pulse radiolysis and laser photoionization reveal the chemistry of the ionic species in the condensed phase. The occurrence of radical cation reactions with solvent molecules provides the core mechanism capable of explaining a wide range of observations in photoionization and radiation chemistry. The study of products and transients in photoionization of aromatic solutes in hydrocarbon and alcohol solvent illustrates several details of… more
