Beryllia and Beryllia-Beryllium Bodies for Moderating Cores in Fuel Elements

Description: From introduction: This report presents the results of the two phases of the work: study of the compatibility of beryllia bodies with a coating material, molybdenum; and studies of beryllia-beryllium body fabrication.

Altitude-wind-tunnel investigation of several afterburner configurations having moderately high burner-inlet velocities

Description: From Introduction: "The screech investigation, reported in reference 1, included a large number of afterburner configurations. Several of these configurations are presented herein to show the effects of afterburner-inlet gas whirl pattern, flame-holder design, and fuel distribution on performance as determined by combustion efficiency, augmented thrust ratio, and special fuel consumption."

The Fast Oxide Breeder-the Fuel Cycle

Description: The development of a fast breeder fuel cycle based on a core fuel consisting of mixed dioxides of uranium and plutonium is described. Process flowsheets, material balances, operating schedules, cost schedules, and a plant layout are presented, and the laboratory- and plant-scale process and equipment demonstrations are described. A cost estimate based on a demonstration of the process including the unique plant equipment gives a total fuel cycle cost of 2.04 mils/kw-hr and a net fuel cycle cost… more

Mound Laboratory participation in the Kelley-Koett Instrument Company radium accident

Description: At 11:20 A.M. Tuesday, July 24, 1951, a radium capsule containing 49.6 milligrams of radium became open to the atmosphere t the Kelley-Koett instrument Company, 930 York Street, Cincinnati, Ohio. This radium was contained in a platinum tube and was used for the purpose of calibrating radiation detection instruments. At the time of the accident, the actual chemical composition of the radium salt was not known. On Tuesday morning, July 31, 1951, Mr. W.A. Bigler and Mr. R.A. Miller of the Monsanto… more

Heat Transfer in Septafoil Geometries by Mass-Transfer Measurements

Description: In conjunction with Gas-Cooled Reactor heat-transfer studies, local and mean heat-transfer factors are predicted from the heat transfer-mass transfer analogy using subliming naphthalene in air. Experimentation was conducted on 1-in.-dis septafoil rods in a 4-in. -dis flow channel with rod center-to center spacings of 1.10, 1.25, and 1.40 in. at a Reynolds modulus of approximately 60,000. Ratios of local mass transfer to mean mass transfer for a given rod vary as much as from 0.7 to 1.3 (outer r… more
