Contained [nu] events observed in Soudan 2

Description: Atmospheric [nu][sub [mu]] and [nu][sub e] are created in cosmic ray interactions in the atmosphere, and can be detected in underground detectors. The Kamiokande and IMB water Cerenkov detectors have found fewer [nu][sub [mu]] interactions (relative to [nu][sub e]) than are expected. Results are usually expressed by the ratio: R[triple bond]([nu][sub [mu]]/[nu][sub [mu]]) measured ([nu][sub [mu]]/[nu][sub e]) predicted with R found to be less than 1. The Soudan 2 detector is an iron calorimeter… more

Underground muon observations in the Soudan 2 detector

Description: The Soudan 2 nucleon decay detector has recorded data since Summer 1988 using a quarter (dimensions 4 m by 8 m by 5 m high) of the eventual detector. This iron-argon time projection chamber records extensive data on each event and has excellent angular and multi-track resolution. We describe the trigger, the event analysis procedure and the current status of the detector and the underground muon data sample. 1 ref.

Search for AGN. nu. 's with the Soudan 2 detector

Description: We present a preliminary null result from a search for diffuse high energy neutrino emission by Active Galactic Nuclei. The method relies on the measurement of catastrophic energy loss by high energy muons in the Soudan 2 calorimeter. A Monte Carlo calculation of the energy loss of high energy muons is described.

Cosmic ray events in Soudan 2

Description: The Soudan 2 detector is located at a depth of 2090 meters-water equivalent (mwe). About 2 million muon events have been recorded. Here we report on our plans to analyze them for comparison with expectations from atmospheric cosmic ray models. Plans and capabilities to analyze multiple muons and monopoles are also discussed. 3 refs., 5 figs.

Contained Events in Soudan 2

Description: A search for contained events in the Soudan 2 nucleon decay detector has been made for the initial exposure of the first quarter of the 1.1 kiloton detector. This corresponds to an exposure of 0.083 kiloton years in the fiducial volume. We observe 5 {nu}{sub mu} candidate events and 5 {nu}{sub e} candidate events. Results of Monte Carlo simulations of neutrino events and proton decay events in Soudan 2 are compared. 6 refs., 3 figs.

Surface Underground Coincidences at the Soudan Mine

Description: A 37 m{sup 2} surface array which has been operating in coincidence with the Soudan 1 underground experiment is described. A comparison is made between measured and expected underground-surface coincident events. The surface array is used to tag'' the energy of the cosmic ray primary. Distributions of event rates and multiple muon rates as a function of energy are shown. Expected rates and plans for an enhanced array and for coincidences with Soudan 2 are also discussed. 1 ref., 6 figs.

A search for magnetic monopoles with the Soudan 2 detector

Description: A search for GUT magnetic monopoles has been conducted using the Soudan 2 nucleon decay detector. This detector is a fine-grained tracking calorimeter. Monopole candidates were selected on the basis of significantly higher ionization than throughgoing cosmic ray muons. Preliminary results, using data taken over approximately one year with no monopoles observed, correspond to a flux limit of 2.4 10{sup {minus}14}cm{sup {minus}2}sr{sup {minus}1}s{sup {minus}1} over a velocity range of 10{sup {min… more

Simultaneous Observations of Extensive Air Showers and Underground Muons at Soudan 2

Description: We have built a small proportional tube air shower array on the surface above the Soudan 2 proton decay detector in Soudan, Minnesota, USA. This array, in coincidence with the underground detector, allows simultaneous surface and underground observations of high energy cosmic ray showers. These observations, still in their initial stages, may eventually be able to provide information about the composition of cosmic ray primaries in the ``knee`` region of the energy spectrum. 4 refs.

Muon/electron separation for atmospheric neutrino interactions

Description: A study has been made of the ability of the Soudan 2 nucleon decay detector to distinguish between showering and non-showering particles, utilizing several different pattern recognition techniques. This work has direct application in the determination of the {nu}{sub {mu}}/{nu}{sub e} ratio for atmospheric neutrino induced events. The results of the application of these techniques to Monte Carlo data and to calibration data from the ISIS test beam are presented.
