A 0. 4 mm Interferometer System Using Dielectric Waveguide

Description: A 0.4 mm submillimeter-wave, phase-modulated polarimeter/interferometer is used for simultaneous time-dependent measurement of line-averaged electron density and poloidal field-induced Faraday rotation along chords of the plasma column in ISX-B tokamak. Heterodyna detection and hollow dielectric waveguide are utilized to achieve the high sensitivity required for the multichord equipment.

Description: This report outlines cuts made in the federal budget for FY2000. 0-D study of the compression of low temperature spheromaks

Description: Compression of low temperature spheromak plasmas has been studied with the aid of a O-D two-fluid computer code. It is found that in a plasma which is radiation dominated, the electron temperature can be increased by up to a factor of seven for a compression of a factor of two, provided the temperature is above some critical value (approx.25eV) and the electron density particle confinement time product n/sub e/tau/sub p/ greater than or equal to 1 x 10/sup 9/s/cm/sup 3/. 1.1-meter bore, 8-Tesla test facility

Description: The design and fabrication of a 1.1-m bore superconducting coil for an 8- T facility at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory are discussed. This facility will provide the backing field required for testing large multifilamentary Nb$sub 3$Sn coils as part of the superconductor development program at Livermore. Description: An experiment was designed utilizing a charge-exchange reaction to study the decay and interactions of the neutral K mesons produced. The experiment produced no events that could be interpreted as either the decay or interaction of neutral K mesons. 2-D time evolution of T/sub e/ during sawtooth crash based on fast ECE (electron cyclotron emission) measurements on TFTR

Description: Electron cyclotron emission measurements taken at 20 locations in the horizontal midplane during a sawtooth crash have been analysed based on the assumption of fast rigid rotation of the plasma. 2-mm microwave interferometer

Description: A 2-mm microwave interferometer has been developed, and phase shift measurements have been made on the Baseball II experiment. The interferometer system employs a 140-GHz receiver for double down conversion of the plasma signal to a 60-MHz, IF frequency. 2$sup 0$K vacuum pumping system for Baseball II

Description: A vacuum pumping system that provides a cryo surface for condensing and freezing of H/sub 2/ gas is described. A closed-loop vacuum system was designed and built at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory to pump down the neutralizer LH/sub e/ dewar with a volurae of 350 l and the lambda point dewar with a LH/sub e/ volume of 250 l. Description: The results from QN3D are presented. QN3D is a 3-dimensional hybrid particle-in-cell code designed to run efficiently on the Cray-2 Multiprocessor. 3-D nonlinear evolution of MHD instabilities

Description: The nonlinear evolution of ideal MHD internal instabilities is investigated in straight cylindrical geometry by means of a 3-D initial-value computer code. These instabilities are characterized by pairs of velocity vortex cells rolling off each other and helically twisted down the plasma column.
