1/2/Sup +/. -->. 1/2/Sup -/ Beta Decay of /Sup 19/Ne and the Parity Nonconserving Nn Force

Description: A branching ratio of (1.20 +- 0.20) x 10/sup -4/ is obtained for the ..beta../sup +/ decay of /sup 19/Ne to the 110 keV 1/2/sup -/ level of /sup 19/F. This transition (presumably dominated by the ..delta..J/sup ..pi../ = 0/sup -/ axial charge operator) provides a crucial test of wavefunctions used in interpreting the parity mixing of the ground and 110 keV levels of /sup 19/F. These wavefunctions, which yield a parity mixing larger than that observed experimentally, also predict too large a ..b… more

16. 3 eV neutron capture in /sup 107/Ag: nuclear structure of /sup 108/Ag. [Transitions, J correlations,. pi. ]

Description: The ..gamma.. rays from neutron capture in the 0- resonance of /sup 107/Ag at 16.3 eV were studied. Thirteen primary transitions populate spin 1 levels in /sup 108/Ag below an energy of 1.5 MeV. Transitions from low lying levels change in intensity by as much as a factor of 2 between thermal neutron capture (largely spin 1) and the 0- resonance, indicating a strong correlation of the population with level spin. 7 references.

2XIIB plasma confinement experiments

Description: This paper discusses results of plasma-confinement experiments in the 2XIIB magnetic mirror device. We report experiments attempting to achieve field-reversal using neutral-beam injection in which the central magnetic field is reduced by 90% but field lines are not closed. Experiments with different neutral-beam aiming show that at constant beta both electron temperature and the energy-confinement parameter (n tau) increase at larger radius. Finally, we discuss recent improvements in electron t… more

Absolute measurements of the /sup 233/U (n,f) cross section between 0. 13 and 8. 0 MeV. [Cross sections, 0. 13 to 8. 0 MeV]

Description: The fast neutron fission cross section of /sup 233/U was measured absolutely between 0.13 and 8.0 MeV. The absolute cross section values were obtained by low geometry alpha counting and isotopic dilution analysis of various /sup 233/U samples, 2..pi..-detection of the fission fragments with an ionization chamber, and the measurement of the neutron flux with several black neutron detectors. Absolute cross sections were obtained with a 2 to 3% uncertainty over the most important energy range.

Absorption and profile modification on spherical targets for. 25 < lambda < 2 microns

Description: LASNEX calculations for focused laser beams on spherical targets have been performed for laser wavelengths of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 microns. One-dimensional calculations, including the ponderomotive force, show a profile steepening that determines the fractional absorption by anomalous mechanism. However, increased absorption occurs at the shorter wavelengths because of more efficient inverse bremsstrahlung absorption at the higher critical densities. In general, the absorption efficiency incr… more

Abundances and Spectra for Cosmic-Ray Nuclei from Li to Fe For 2to 150 GeV/n

Description: We report measurements of the absolute and relative abundances, differential energy spectra, and spectral indices for cosmic-ray nuclei from Li to Fe for 2 to 150 GeV/nucleon. These measurements were made using a balloon-borne superconducting magnetic spectrometer with scintillators and optical spark chambers. The abundances of Li, Be, and B for rigidities below 10 GV/c are consistent with an energy-independent mean interstellar pathlength of 4 1/2 {+-} 1/2 g cm{sup -2} for all propagation mode… more

Addendum to a Proposal for ATLAS: a Precision-Ion Accelerator at Argonne National Laboratory, December 1978

Description: This revised proposal for the construction of the Argonne Tandem-Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS) is in all essentials the same as the proposal originally presented to NUSAC in March 1978. The only differences worth mentioning are the plan to expand the experimental area somewhat more than was originally proposed and an increased cost, brought about principally by inflation. The outline presented is the same (with minor change in wording) as in the original document, reproduced here for the con… more

Advanced methods for nuclear reactor gas laser coupling

Description: Research is described that led to the discovery of three nuclear-pumped lasers (NPLs) using mixtures of Ne--N/sub 2/, He--Hg, and He or Ne with CO or CO/sub 2/. The Ne--N/sub 2/ NPL was the first laser obtained with modest neutron fluxes from a TRIGA reactor (vs fast burst reactors used elsewhere in such work), the He--Hg NPL was the first visible nuclear-pumped laser, while the Ne--CO and He--CO/sub 2/ lasers are the first to provide energy storage on a millisecond time scale. Important potent… more

AES study of the adsorption of O/sub 2/, CO, CO/sub 2/, and H/sub 2/O on indium

Description: The adsorption of various oxygen-containing gases on clean polycrystalline In has been studied. For the In-O/sub 2/ system, the relationship between N(E) areas and dN(E)/dE peak heights for the In MNN Auger transition was found to be linear. At saturation, an oxygen/indium ratio of 3/2 was measured, consistent with the formation of the stable oxide In/sub 2/O/sub 3/. Low coverage sticking coefficients were found to be approximately .014 for O/sub 2/, approximately .004 for H/sub 2/O, approximat… more

Alfven resonance heating via magnetosonic modes in large tokamaks

Description: The theory of Alfven resonance heating of tokamaks is extended beyond the incompressible MHD model to include finite ..omega../..cap omega../sub i/ effects, which lead to off-diagonal terms in the conductivity tensor, and compressibility, which permits the fast Alfven mode. The finite frequency effects can greatly change the dissipation resulting from the shear Alfven resonance. With an appropriate choice of parameters, the dissipation can vanish allowing high-Q toroidal eigenmodes in large tok… more

Alfven wave. [Book on linear and nonlinear properties for fusion applications]

Description: Seven chapters are included. Chapters 1 and 2 introduce the Alfven wave and describe its linear properties in a homogeneous medium. Chapters 3 and 4 cover the effects of inhomogeneities on these linear properties. Particular emphasis is placed on the appearance of a continuum spectrum and the associated absorption of the Alfven wave which arise due to the inhomogeneity. The explanation of the physical origin of absorption is given using kinetic theory. Chapter 5 is devoted to the associated pla… more

Algorithm for locating the extremum of a multi-dimensional constrained function and its application to the PPPL Hybrid Study

Description: A description is presented of a general algorithm for locating the extremum of a multi-dimensional constrained function. The algorithm employs a series of techniques dominated by random shrinkage, steepest descent, and adaptive creeping. A discussion follows of the algorithm's application to a ''real world'' problem, namely the optimization of the price of electricity, P/sub eh/, from a hybrid fusion-fission reactor. Upon the basis of comparisons with other optimization schemes of a survey natu… more
