Questions on the toxicity and behavior of product in the body

Description: This May 1945 report deals with how best to estimate the toxicity of ``Product`` to workers at Clinton Laboratories. Discussed are the issues of how toxic product is relative to radium, methods of analysis of product in the body, means of elimination from and distribution of product within the body, and what therapeutic measures are available. The principal concern of the author is that of protection of personnel who regularly handle in the laboratory large amounts of this material.

A method for the calculation of external lift, moment, and pressure drag of slender open-nose bodies of revolution at supersonic speeds

Description: An approximate method is presented for the calculation of the external lift, moment, and pressure drag of slender open-nose bodies of revolution of supersonic speeds. The lift, moment, and pressure drag of a typical ram-jet body shape are calculated at Mach numbers 1.45, 1.60, 1.75, and 3.00; and the lift and moment results are compared with available experimental data. The agreement of the calculated lift and moment data with the experimental data is excellent. The pressure-drag comparison was… more

The Chlorination of TO₃

Description: Abstract: The applicability of specific mixtures and organic chlorocarbons in general toward the chlorination of TO₃ has been tested by means of reactions is sealed glass tubes. The results show that thionyl chloride mixed with tetrachloroethylene or a bromothane of the tyoe CHBrC12 will produce TCI4 directly. This same result is produced by CBr2C12 alone.

TO₃ Reduction and Chlorination in the Experimental Glass Fluidizer

Description: Abstract: "Temperatures above 400 C are required before reduction will take place with AH3. Above 500 C, a pyrophoric product was obtained. The chlorination temperature should be about 350 C initially and above 450 C at the end of the reaction to achieve 99% chlorination."

Bending-Torsion Flutter Calculations Modified by Subsonic Compressibility Corrections

Description: From Summary: "A number of calculations of bending-torsion wing flutter are made at two Mach numbers, m=0 (incompressible case) and m=0.7, and results are compared. The air forces employed for the case of m=0.7 are based on Frazer's recalculation of Possio's results, which are derived on the assumption of small disturbances to the main flow. For ordinary wings of normal density and of low bending frequency in comparison with torsion frequency, the compressibility correction to the flutter speed… more

Effect of stainless steel thimbles on pile reactivity

Description: Failure of a vertical safety rod thimble at 105-B has led to consideration of a stainless steel (SS) thimble as replacement. 1/16 in. SS would result in 4% loss in control power of that safety rod. If all thimbles were replaced by 1/16 in. SS, there would be a reactivity loss of 790 ih.

Xenon and iodine concentrations in the environs of the T and B Plant

Description: A report of seven stack emissions of I-131 at the T and B plants, detailing the relationship between cooling times and dilution factors for the safe emission of the isotope. From the stack sampling, personal exposure limits for an eight and nine hour day are calculated. The effect of atmospheric conditions appears to be negligible, although periods of atmospheric stagnation may have an effect on the I-131 concentration. Environmental effects are minimized by increasing the cooling times of the … more
