Use of a General Nonlinear Least-Squares Curve Fitting Program With Nonclosed Form Relationships. [GNLS, in FORTRAN for CDC Computers]

Description: A use for GNLS, a general nonlinear least-squares curve fitting program, is presented. In this use GNLS determines a set of best parameters for relationships that cannot be written in closed form. This program can be useful for experimenters who need to determine experimental parameters by fitting nonclosed-form relationships to experimental data. Two examples are given to indicate how GNLS can be used for this type of problem. 11 figures.

Fortran for the 1980's

Description: The new standard Fortran 77 has not been available long, but the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) committee X3J3 responsible for Fortran standardization is already working on the next revision. Since the result of this work will be a candidate for an international (ISO) standard, it is important that work being done now become known to all persons interested in Fortran. A new set of problems related to the accommodation of related standards in data base management and real-time proc… more

Chemical Depth Profiling from Neutron Reflectometry

Description: The material profile of a thin film can be analyzed by placing the film on a substrate and by sending a neutron beam onto it at various angles of incidence. Technically, the scattering length density of the film needs to be determined as a function of depth. A reflectometer is used to measure the amount of reflection (reflectivity) as a function of the angle of incidence. Mathematically, this is equivalent to sending the neutron beam onto the film at every energy but at a fixed angle of inciden… more

Radiative effects in scattering of polarized leptons by polarized nucleons and light nuclei

Description: Recent developments in the field of radiative effects in polarized lepton-nuclear scattering are reviewed. The processes of inclusive, semi-inclusive, diffractive and elastic scattering are considered. The explicit formulae obtained within the covariant approach are discussed. FORTRAN codes POLRAD, RADGEN, HAPRAD, DIFFRAD and MASCARAD created on the basis of the formulae are briefly described. Applications for data analysis of the current experiments on lepton-nuclear scattering at CERN, DESY, … more

Automatic Differentiation of Codes in Nuclear Engineering Applications.

Description: We discuss our experience in applying automatic differentiation (AD) to calculations in nuclear reactor applications. The document is intended as a guideline on how to apply AD to Fortran codes with significant legacy components; it is also a part of a larger research effort in uncertainty quantification using sampling methods augmented with derivative information. We provide a brief theoretical description of the concept of AD, explain the necessary changes in the code structure, and remark on… more

Debugging Fortran on a shared memory machine

Description: Debugging on a parallel processor is more difficult than debugging on a serial machine because errors in a parallel program may introduce nondeterminism. The approach to parallel debugging presented here attempts to reduce the problem of debugging on a parallel machine to that of debugging on a serial machine by automatically detecting nondeterminism. 20 refs., 6 figs.

A Standard format for Les Houches event files

Description: A standard file format is proposed to store process and event information, primarily output from parton-level event generators for further use by general-purpose ones. The information content is identical with what was already defined by the Les Houches Accord five years ago, but then in terms of Fortran commonblocks. This information is embedded in a minimal XML-style structure, for clarity and to simplify parsing.

The KIVA-II computer program for transient multidimensional chemically reactive flows with sprays

Description: Since its public release in 1985, the KIVA computer program has been utilized for the time dependent analysis of chemically reacting flows with sprays in two and three space dimensions. This paper describes some of the improvements to the original version that have been made since that time. The new code called KIVA-II is planned for public release in early 1988. KIVA-II improves the earlier version in the accuracy and efficiency of the computational procedure, the accuracy of the physics submo… more

ABCXYZ: vector potential (A) and magnetic field (B) code (C) for Cartesian (XYZ) geometry using general current elements. [In LRL TRAN for CDC > 600 computer]

Description: ABCXYZ is a computer code for obtaining the Cartesian components of the vector potential and the magnetic field on an observed grid from an arrangement of current-carrying wires. Arbitrary combinations of straight line segments, arcs, and loops are allowed in the specification of the currents. Arbitrary positions and orientations of the current-carrying elements are also allowed. Specification of the wire diameter permits the computation of well-defined fields, even in the interiors of the cond… more

LAPACK users' guide: Release 1. 0

Description: LAPACK is a transportable library of Fortran 77 subroutines for solving the most common problems in numerical linear algebra: systems of linear equations, linear least squares problems, eigenvalue problems and singular value problems. LAPACK is designed to supersede LINPACK and EISPACK, principally by restructuring the software to achieve much greater efficiency on vector processors, high-performance superscalar'' workstations, and shared-memory multi-processors. LAPACK also adds extra function… more

ZFITTER: A Semi-analytical program for fermion pair production in e+ e- annihilation, from version 6.21 to version 6.42

Description: ZFITTER is a Fortran program for the calculation of fermion pair production and radiative corrections at high energy e{sup +}e{sup -} colliders; it is also suitable for other applications where electroweak radiative corrections appear. ZFITTER is based on a semi-analytical approach to the calculation of radiative corrections in the Standard Model. They present a summary of new features of the ZFITTER program version 6.42 compared to version 6.21. The most important additions are: (1) some highe… more

UNIX programmer`s environment and configuration control

Description: A package of UNIX utilities has been developed which unities the advantages of the public domain utility ``imake`` and a configuration control system. The ``imake`` utility is portable It allows a user to make Makefiles on a wide variety of platforms without worrying about the machine-dependent idiosyncracies of the UNIX utility ``make.`` Makefiles are a labor-saving device for compiling and linking complicated programs, and ``imake`` is a labor-saving device for making Makefiles, as well as ot… more

Location errors in angle-measuring and distance-measuring systems. [TONER, for CDC 6600 computer]

Description: Methods are described for the location of an object by using angle-measuring systems, distance-measuring systems, or a mix of the two. With reasonable assumptions on the statistics of the data errors in these systems, an analysis is presented which yields the statistics of the errors in object location; a data weighting scheme is shown which minimizes the variance of the location errors; and, as an aid to designers of such systems, a computer program is described which computes and plots locati… more
