Artificial geothermal reservoirs in hot volcanic rock

Description: S>Some recent results from the Los Alamos program in which hydraulic fracturing is used for the recovery of geothermal energy are discussed. The location is about 4 kilometers west and south of the ring fault of the enormous Jemez Caldera in the northcentral part of New Mexico. It is shown that geothermal energy may be extracted from hot rock that does not contain circulating hot water or steam and is relatively impermeable. A fluid is pumped at high pressure into an isolated section of a wellb… more

Imagery from Infrared Scanning of the East and Southwest Rift Zones of Kilauea and the Lower Portion of the Southwest Rift Zone of Mauna Loa, Island of Hawaii

Description: From July 31 through August 4, 1973 night time flights for obtaining infrared imagery along the east and southwest rift zones of Kilauea and the southwest rift zone of Mauna Loa were undertaken on the island of Hawaii. Flights were also made on Hualalai and Kohala volcanoes but because of inconclusive results, they are not included in this report. Ground control stations had been established during daylight hours several days prior to starting the flight program. Students stationed at the groun… more

Missing Mass Spectra from p p ---> p X from 9-GeV/c to 300-GeV/c

Description: Missing mass spectra were obtained by measuring recoil protons from the reaction p + p {yields} p + X in the Jacobian peak region at |t| = 0.175 and 0.25 (GeV/c){sup 2}. The incident momentum range from 9 to 300 GeV/c was covered continuously by taking data during the acceleration ramp of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory machine. Our missing mass range varied from 1.5 to 8.5 GeV and we observed the well known N*(1688) and N*(2l90) but no significant structures at higher mass.

MAXIMUM HUMIDITY INDICATOR

Description: Moisture-sensitive systems to measure and indicate the maximum level of humidity exposure are discussed. A chemical indicator utilizing deliquescent salts and water-soluble dyes provides an irreversible color change at discrete levels of relative humidity. To provide indication of the time at which the exposure occurs, a circuit employing a resistive-type sensor was developed. A small, commercially available sensor is used in a portable probe to detect humidity leaks into controlled areas.

Proton-Induced L-shell X-Rays of Pr, Sm, Eu, Gd, and Dy

Description: Characteristic L-shell x rays of the five rare earths Pr, Sm, Eu, Gd, and Dy were studied in this work. The x rays were produced by ionization from 0.3 to 2.0 MeV protons from the 2.0 MV Van de Graaff at North Texas State University. Total L-shell ionization and x-ray production cross sections were measured for Sm and compared to the BEA, CBEA and PWBA theories. Total L-shell ionization cross sections were measured for Pr, Eu, Gd, and Dy and compared to the BEA, CBEA, and PWBA. The CBEA and PW… more

A Working Bibliography on the Art of Drawing

Description: This working bibliography of 835 publications on the art of drawing is presented in five categories: Educational and Psychological, Historical, "How-to," Technical, and Techniques of Teaching Drawing. The latter category is annotated, offering a synthesis of the areas of art education and drawing. This bibliography is designed for scholars, artists, and teachers as well as students of the many facets of drawing.

Distributions of Rapidity Intervals, Jet Ranges and Maximum Rapidity Gaps in Proton - Proton Interactions at 200-GeV/c

Description: The semiinclusive reaction p+p {yields} n charged particles + anything was investigated with nuclear emulsions irradiated with 200 GeV/c protons at the NAL accelerator (Batavia, US). They measured angles {Theta} of all charged particles. In every event particles were ordered on rapidity which was approximated by the value y = -lntg {Theta}lab/2. In every event particles were numbered on increasing the rapidity. Let us consider, for example, distributions of ordered rapidities and distributions … more

Rocky Flats model 2030-1 container (AEC--AL USA/5332/BLF) safety analysis report for packaging (SARP)

Description: Division, Dow Chemical U.S.A., for shipping unirradiated fissile material in solid form. Components consist of a 30-gal steel drum, Celotex insulation, and stainless steel containment vessel(s) of 10-in. dia. A simple venting system prevents rtupture of the outer drum in the event of accidental fire. Approved material limits include 5 kg of plutonium or 11 kg of enriched uranium. Thermal decay energy is normally limited to 20 W. Results of extensive tests show the container will function effect… more

The Development of Radio Broadcasting in Nigeria, West Africa

Description: The purpose of this study is to set forth the history of radio in Nigeria. Chapters explore the history of Nigeria, the history of Nigerian radio, and the present structure of Nigerian radio. In a final chapter, specific historical factors are isolated that have made Nigerian radio what it is today. The study concludes that the present structure of Nigerian radio is a direct product of the peculiar history of Nigeria as a former British Colony. Little can be done to solve the problems of Nigeri… more

1-1/2-Loop Semiscale Isothermal Test Program: Program and System Description in Support of Experiment Data Reports.

Description: The isothermal test series is part of the Semiscale Blowdown and Emergency Core Cooling (ECC) Project conducted by Aerojet Nuclear Company for the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. The test series consisted of ten blowdown tests and five hot-wall tests with emphasis on emergency core coolant delivery. The blowdown tests were conducted to investigate the effects of lower plenum geometry, heat transfer configuration, ECC injection location, downcomer gap size, and break size.
