Fusion reactor radioactive waste management

Description: Quantities and compositions of non-tritium radioactive waste are estimated for some current conceptual fusion reactor designs, and disposal of large amounts of radioactive waste appears necessary. Although the initial radioactivity of fusion reactor and fission reactor wastes are comparable, the radionuclides in fusion reactor wastes are less hazardous and have shorter half-lives. Areas requiring further research are discussed.

Chemistry of coal-related microparticles

Description: This research project involves the study of coal macerals and sorbent microparticles used to remove S0{sub 2} and/or H{sub 2}S from process streams. To measure reaction rates a charged single microparticle will be held electrodynamically in one or more laser beams by superposed ac and dc electrical fields. The use of the electrodynamic balance for microparticle studies was pioneered by one of the principal investigators. One of the laser beams is used for light-scattering measurements to determ… more

Denitrification of nitrate waste solutions

Description: Growth rates for the denitrifying bacteria Pseudomonas Stutzeri were studied to minimize the time necessary to start up a bacterial denitrification reactor. Batch experiments were performed in nine 250-ml Erlenmeyer flasks, a 7-liter fermentor, and a 67-liter fermentor. All reactors maintained an anaerobic environment. Initial microorganism inoculum concentration was varied over four orders of magnitude. Initial nitrate and substrate carbon concentrations were varied from 200 to 6000 ppm and fr… more

Change of scope relocation of Purex cooling water swamp project CA-683

Description: It has been proposed that facilities be provided which can be used to divert the Purex cooling water from the facilities already proposed on this project to a depression within the 540 ft. elevation contour at approximate plant coordinates 34,300 N, 40200 W. These facilities are in addition to the change of scope referred to in reference (1). The purpose of these new facilities is to forma hydrologic dam as part of the ground water table which would aid in the confining of contamination and/or … more

The Fernald Waste Recycling Program

Description: Recycling is considered a critical component of the waste disposition strategy at the Fernald Plant. It is estimated that 33 million cubic feet of waste will be generated during the Fernald cleanup. Recycling some portion of this waste will not only conserve natural resources and disposal volume but will, even more significantly, support the preservation of existing disposition options such as off-site disposal or on-site storage. Recognizing the strategic implications of recycling, this paper … more

C-018H LERF filtration test plan. Revision 1

Description: The following outlines the plan to test the polymeric backwash filtration system at the LERF. These tests will determine if the ETF filter design is adequate. If the tests show that the design is adequate, the task will be complete. If the tests show that the technology is inadequate, it may be necessary to perform further tests to qualify other candidate filtration technologies (e.g., polymeric tubular ultrafiltration, centrifugal ultrafiltration). The criteria to determine the success or fail… more

Air toxics evaluation of ABB Combustion Engineering Low-Emission Boiler Systems

Description: The specific goals of the program are to identify air toxic compounds that might be emmitted from the new boiler with its various Air Pollution Control device for APCD alternatives in levels of regulatory concern. For the compounds thought to be of concern, potential air toxic control methodologies will be suggested and a Test Protocol will be written to be used in the Proof of Concept and full scale tests. The following task was defined: Define Replations and Standards; Identify Air Toxic Poll… more

Uranium settling rates in SRS waste supernate

Description: The evaporation of SRS High Level Waste supernate is accompanied by a decrease in the solubility of uranium, and thus uranium precipitates as the complex compound usually referred to as Na{sub 2}U{sub 2}O{sub 7}. The precipitated Na{sub 2}U{sub 2}O{sub 7} and other precipitated solids will settle through the concentrated evaporator product at a rate determined by Stokes` Law. The quantities which make up Stokes` Law can all be determined from physical measurements, and the settling rate thus de… more

Solubility of pllutonium in alkaline salt solutions

Description: Plutonium solubility data from several studies have been evaluated. For each data set, a predictive model has been developed where appropriate. In addition, a statistical model and corresponding prediction intervals for plutonium solubility as a quadratic function of the hydroxide concentration have been developed. Because of the wide range of solution compositions, the solubility of plutonium can vary by as much as three orders of magnitude for any given hydroxide concentration and still remai… more

The solubilities of significant organic compounds in HLW tank supernate solutions -- FY 1995 progress report

Description: At the Hanford Site organic compounds were measured in tank supernate simulant solutions during FY 1995. This solubility information will be used to determine if these organic salts could exist in solid phases (saltcake or sludges) in the waste where they might react violently with the nitrate or nitrite salts present in the tanks. Solubilities of sodium glycolate, succinate, and caproate salts; iron and aluminum and butylphosphate salts; and aluminum oxalate were measured in simulated waste su… more
