Fiber array technique for subnanosecond x-ray framing camera

Description: A subnanosecond x-ray framing camera technique employing a fiber optics image dissector coupled to a 10 ps optical streak camera will be described. The output data from the streak camera can be reduced from photographic film or directly couple into a SEC Vidicon camera for immediate computer decoding of each scan line into a two dimensional picture. Optical guiding in a free electron laser

Description: The coherent interaction between an optical wave and an electron beam in a free electron laser (FEL) is shown to be capable of optically guiding the light. The effect is analyzed using a two-dimensional approximation for the FEL equations, and using the properties of optical fibers. 850 J, 150 ns narrow-band krypton fluoride laser

Description: We report laser experiments on a 248 nm KrF laser with a 30x40x120 cm gain volume and an injection locked unstable resonator cavity. The volume is pumped by six 450 kV, 90 kA electron beam generators using water pulse forming lines.

Design of neutron streak camera for fusion diagnostics

Description: In laser fusion, such as with the NOVA under construction at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the D-T reaction is expected to be complete within 100 ps. It is important to measure the time-dependence of the neutron flux from the fusion target. We describe the design of a new neutron detector of 20 ps resolving time that can be used to study the history of fusion burn.

The equation of state of liquid Flibe

Description: Flibe (Li{sub 2}BeF{sub 4}) is a candidate material for the liquid blanket in the HYLIFE-2 fusion reactor. The analysis of the Flibe jets in HYLIFE-II

Description: In the HYLIFE-2 Inertial Confinement Fusion reactor, an array of Flibe (Li{sub 2}BeFe{sub 4}) jets is designed to protect the chamber from the fusion radiation. During the fusion pulse the Flibe jets sustain an instantaneous neutron and X-ray heating. Mass spectrometer determination of argon contents in laser fusion target pellets

Description: A system for measuring argon contents in individual laser fusion targets using a getter pumped closed volume quadrupole mass spectrometer has been developed. Accuracy of 10% can be obtained, limited by the calibration standard and electron multiplier drift. Measurements are simple, unambiguous and can be performed at up to one per hour with a sensitivity equivalent to 1 x 10/sup 3/ Pa (.01 atm) argon in a 140 ..mu..m internal diameter sphere.

Improving the bulk laser-damage resistance of KDP by baking and pulsed-laser irradiation

Description: Isolated bulk damage centers are produced when KDP crystals are irradiated by 1-ns 1064-nm pulses. We have tested about 100 samples and find the median threshold to be 7 J/cm/sup 2/ when the samples are irradiated only once at each test volume (1-on-1 tests). The median threshold increased to 11 J/cm/sup 2/ when the test volumes were first subjected to subthreshold laser irradiation (n-on-1 tests). Description: Propagation of a heavy ion beam to the target appears possible under conditions thought to be realizable by several reactor designs. Estimated refractive index and solid density of DT, with application to hollow-microsphere laser targets

Description: The literature values for the 0.55-$mu$m refractive index N of liquid and gaseous H$sub 2$ and D$sub 2$ are combined to yield the equation (N - 1) = [(3.15 +- 0.12) x 10$sup -6$]rho, where rho is the density in moles per cubic meter. This equation can be extrapolated to 300$sup 0$K for use on DT in solid, liquid, and gas phases. Development of Compton Radiography Diagnostics for Inertial Confinement Fusion Implosions
