Combustion of Liquid Fuels in Diesel Engine

Description: Hitherto, definite specifications have always been made for fuel oils and they have been classified as more or less good or non-utilizable. The present aim, however, is to build Diesel engines capable of using even the poorest liquid fuels and especially the waste products of the oil industry, without special chemical or physical preparation.

Spindled and Hollow Spars

Description: "The most usual method of arriving at the maximum amount of spindling or hollowing out permissible in the case of any particular spar section is by trial and error, a process which is apt to become laborious in the absence of good guessing - or luck. The following tables have been got out with the object of making it possible to arrive with certainty at a suitable section at the first attempt" (p. 1).

Concrete Airship Sheds at Orly, France Part 2: Supporting Structure and Method of Moving, Mechanism for Moving the Centering, Apparatus for Handling the Materials, Remarks on Construction Details

Description: This report deals mainly with the methods of construction employed when after the plan had been approved. The foundation, side walls, doors and roof are all discussed and the economic savings resulting from this method of construction.

Concrete Airship Sheds at Orly, France Part 1: General Aspect of the Problem, Basic Principles of the Final Project, Principal Structural Elements

Description: This report details the contest to design and build concrete airship hangers. The difficulty lies in the magnitude of the absolute dimensions. An airship shed must withstand two principal types of stresses: those resulting from its own weight and those due to the wind. This report discusses both problems in detail.

Handley Page Metal Construction

Description: In this report Handley Page construction techniques are shown such as: solid-drawn tubular duralumin spars are used in the stabilizer; plain channel sections are used extensively for minor components; and the manner of assembling them into a stabilizer compression strut is shown.

Lift Distribution and Longitudinal Stability of an Airplane

Description: The preliminary calculation of the airplane polar and hence of the flight performances and characteristics rests on the assumption of an elliptical lift distribution at all altitudes. For large angles of attack below C(sub a (sub max)), this method of calculation yields no satisfactory agreement with measurements made in flight. An attempt is made to eliminate the errors in the preliminary calculation by the assumption of a disturbance of the lift distribution in this angle-of-attack range, whi… more

Velocity Distribution in the Boundary Layer of a Submerged Plate

Description: This report deals with the measurement of the velocity distribution of the air in the velocity of a plate placed parallel to the air flow. The measurements took place in a small wind tunnel where the diameter of the entrance cone is 30 cm and the length of the free jet between the entrance and exit cones is about 2.5 m. The measurements were made in the free jet where the static pressure was constant, which was essential for the method of measurement used.

Schütte-Lanz Airship Projects After the War

Description: The stressing of an airship depends on three nonuniformly distributed forces: air forces; the distribution of acceleration forces; and how the air pressure is distributed on the hull. This report examines the stresses and comes to conclusions on the size of airships.

Nieuport-Astra Parachute Contest

Description: Report presenting a description of a parachute design contest. The object of this contest was to obtain a parachute of light weight and small bulk, suitable for airplanes. The primary areas of focus were safety, ability to be installed on airplanes, speed, materials, and behavior of the parachutes in the air.

Tin Soldering of Aluminum and Its Alloys

Description: A method is presented for soldering aluminum to other metals. The method adopted consists of a galvanic application to the surface of the light-metal parts to be soldered, of a layer of another metal, which, without reacting electrolytically on the aluminum, adheres strongly to the surface to which it is applied, and is, on the other hand, adapted to receive the soft solder. The metal found to meet the criteria best was iron.

Inherent Stability of Helicopters

Description: The equilibrium, in still air, of a "stationary" helicopter (i.e., of one having neither vertical nor translational velocity, but a tendency to remain practically motionless within restricted limits of space) presents some difficulty in practice and justifies a theoretical investigation of its "inherent stability," i.e., independent of the pilot.

Theory of Flapping Flight

Description: "Before attempting to construct a human-powered aircraft, the aviator will first try to post himself theoretically on the possible method of operating the flapping wings. This report will present a graphic and mathematical method, which renders it possible to determine the power required, so far as it can be done on the basis of the wing dimensions. We will first consider the form of the flight path through the air" (p. 1).

[Memorandums on the Subject of Joukowski Wings]

Description: In the first article, in connection with a lecture on the hydrodynamic basis of flight and the potential flow about a Joukowski wing, the pressure distribution on several wings is computed and plotted. The diagrams of the pressure distributions are presented accompanied with a qualitative discussion of the pressure distribution. In the second article, the the cross-sectional outline (or profile) a Joukowski wing are plotted.
