Scintillation response of lithium fluoride

Description: Thesis. Lithium fluoride crystals, with TlF added to the charge, were prepared by the Bridgman- Stockbarger method. The scintillation response to photon energies between 25 and 1250 keV for these crystals and a commercially prepared LiF (Ti) crystal was studied. The response of the LiF (Ti) crystal was compared to the response of an NE109 scintillator at 1250 keV. The dose response of the LiF (Ti) crystal was evaluated over the energy range 25 to 1250 keV. The absorption and emission spectra of… more

200-GeV ISA with room temperature magnets

Description: A conceptual design study of 200-GeV proton intersecting storage accclerators with room temperature magnets is presented. The key to this study was thc desire to keep the electric power consumptiom to an acceptable level (40 MW). The design has been optimized by choosing small-gap (4 cm) aluminum coil dipoles operating at about 15 kG. The luminosity of this machine is limited to about 10/sup 32/ cm-/sup -2/ sec/sup -1/ by transverse space-charg e effects. An order of magnitude higher luminositi… more

Composition of corrosion films on lithium hydride surfaces after exposure to air

Description: An ion microprobe mass analyzer was used to investigate the reaction pathway for the formation of lithium hydroxide and lithium oxide on freshly cleaved lithium deuteride surfaces. Mass spectra were obtained from the lithium deuteride surfaces before and after exposure to room air, and the composition of the corrosion film was determined by depth-profiling methods. The corrosion film appears to be layered in the following manner: lithium hydroxide on lithium oxide on lithium deuteride. (auth)

Influence of pressure variations on the focus of electron beams used for welding

Description: An experimental study has shown that the variations in pressure typically experienced in an electron-beam welding chamber can significantly affect the focus of the electron beam, resulting in detectable variations in weld penetration and width. (auth)
