The Effect of Sequencing Microeconomics and Macroeconomics on Learning

Description: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect on student learning from the sequence in which microeconomics and macroeconomics courses are taken. The sample for this study consisted of all students enrolled in 23 sections of Economics 1100 (Principles of Microeconomics) and 10 sections of Economics 1110 (Principles of Macroeconomics) during the fall semester, 1987, at the University of North Texas. The sample also consisted of all students enrolled in 14 sections of Economics 1100 and … more

Correlational Study of the UNT Neuropsych-Screen, the MMPI and Time among Chronic Pain Patients

Description: Although many theorists have speculated that chronic pain may be linked to some sort of central neuropsychological integration deficit, a review of the current literature reveals no empirical support for this theory. This study attempts to assess the severity, if any, of neuropsychological deficits in chronic pain subjects by using a neuropsychological screen developed at the University of North Texas. Also, presented are studies of correlations between the UNT Neuropsych-screen and the MMPI. t… more

A Study of College Stress and Its Measurement

Description: The purpose of the study was to compare the academic stress of freshmen in a community college with that of freshmen in a university. An additional purpose was to determine if gender, ethnicity, or semester course load was related to perceived academic stress. The sample consisted of a total of 303 university and community college freshmen from English and Psychology classes at the University of North Texas and Richland Community College during the spring semester, 1989. The instrument that was… more

Approximating soil loss calculations with satellite data and multivariate regression analyses

Description: Digital satellite remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been used effectively to determine the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) output for a number of North Texas watersheds. This method involves determining the values of each of the USLE factors and using these factors as information layers within the GIS.

An Investigation into the Effectiveness of Intelligent Tutoring on Learning of College Level Statistics

Description: The present research incorporated the content of basic statistics into the Artificial Intelligence Physics Tutor (ARPHY), which was used as the expert system shell, and investigated the effects of the Artificial Intelligent Statistics Tutor (ARSTAT) as a supplement to learning statistics at the college level. Two classes of an introductory educational statistics course in the Department of Educational Foundations, University of North Texas, were used in the study. The daytime class was used as … more

A Study of Remediation of Language Arts Objectives Using an Experimental Curriculum

Description: The purpose of this study was to determine if students who participated in language arts remediation which was infused with critical thinking activities and metacognition would make greater gains in skills and achievement than those students who were remediated with a regular language arts curriculum. The population for this study was a group of at risk students who were fourteen to sixteen years old and who were participants in the 1987 summer Youth Opportunities Unlimited project at the Unive… more

Isolation of the xylE-xylL region of Pseudomonas putida plasmid pDKR1 and determination of the complete nucleotide sequence of the xylE gene encoding catechol 2,3-dioxygenase

Description: A 5.1 kbEcoR I fragment from Pseudomonas putida TOL plsmid pDKR1, carrying the xylE and xylL genes, was inserted into pBR 325 and transformed into E. coli. The xylE region, coding for catechol 2,3-dioxygenase, was subjected to Maxam-Gilbert sequencing reactions.

Self Cognitions of Depressed Adolescents: a Personal Construct Approach

Description: The primary purpose of the study was to quantify the characteristics of certain self cognitions that occur in depressed adolescents. A secondary purpose was to assess the change that occurs in these self cognitions during a depressive episode. The intervention, in the form of guided imagery about a previous drug-using episode, was used to induce a mood change. The REP, a Personal Construct Theory measure, and the Beck Depression Inventory were used in a repeated measures design.

Polynomial Isomorphisms of Cayley Objects Over a Finite Field

Description: In this dissertation the Bays-Lambossy theorem is generalized to GF(pn). The Bays-Lambossy theorem states that if two Cayley objects each based on GF(p) are isomorphic then they are isomorphic by a multiplier map. We use this characterization to show that under certain conditions two isomorphic Cayley objects over GF(pn) must be isomorphic by a function on GF(pn) of a particular type.

Estimating Nonpoint Source Pollution in North Texas Watersheds through Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems

Description: Monitoring nonpoint source pollution in a large area is often impractical. However, estimating nonpoint pollution through use of empirical models such as the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) provides a basis for identifying problem areas, and setting management priorities. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of using Landsat imagery and existing geographic data to estimate the effects of land use changes on water quality in four North Texas watersheds over a twelve yea… more

Response of Freshwater and Saltwater Toxicity Test Species to Calcium and Salinity Concentrations Encountered in Toxicity Tests

Description: The responses of freshwater (Daphnia magna. Pimephales promelas) and saltwater (Mysidopsis bahia. Cyprinodon variegatus) toxicity test species to elevated calcium concentrations and changing salinity conditions were investigated. The use of salinity as a criterion for selection between saltwater and freshwater test species was investigated by conducting both calcium and salinity toxicity tests. Salinity was determined to be an inappropriate criterion under conditions encountered in this study.
