Nuclear Explosives as Applied to Mining and Mineral Industries

Description: Presentation at the National Western Mining Conference of the Colorado Mining Association, Denver, Colorado, February 7, 1959. Thank you for your invitation to discuss here today some of the aspects of nuclear explosions in mining and mineral industries. I should like this afternoon to dwell briefly upon: (1) The phenology of a nuclear explosion underground. What happens; with what energies are we concerned, and what may be the scientific and industrial results of such an explosion? (2) The … more

A Test for Electron Transfer in the Intermetallic Compound, V4Al23

Description: Abstract: "Abnormally short interatomic distances are characteristic of aluminum-transition element compounds which occur at the aluminum-rich ends of the phase diagram." Summary: "The theoretical model assumed in this investigation was that of spherical distribution of electrons centered about atomic sites in the V4Al23 structure, represented by the theoretical scattering factors for the isolated atoms. ...It is evident from the (Fo-Fc)-synthesis maps that too much scattering power has been … more

The Mass Spectrum of Stannane

Description: From abstract: "The mass spectrum of stannane, SnH4, has been studied. Ion fragmentation patterns for both the singly and doubly charged fragments were obtained employing 70-volt electrons. From appearance potential data, an estimation of the bond energies of the tin-hydrogen bond in the ion-species SnH+3-H, SnH+2-H, SnH+-H, Sn+-H has been made along with [delta]Hf for SnH4. The studies were first made with tin of normal isotopic abundance, and then the results were corroborated with SnH4 prepa… more

Intermediate Heat Exchanger Preliminary Design. Vol. 1, IHX Preliminary Design

Description: Preface: The intermediate heat exchanger is designed for operation in a nuclear power plant using liquid sodium as the primary and secondary coolant. Since the primary fluid coming from the reactor is radioactive, the purpose of the IHX is to transfer heat to a nonradioactive fluid which then goes to a steam generator. Because of this activity the until will be enclosed in a concrete pit and will not be accessible during periods of operation. Immediately after shut down it will be necessary … more

Decontamination Program Task II. Volume 1, Contamination and Decontamination in Nuclear Power Reactors

Description: Abstract: A survey of the problem of reactor system contamination by radioactive material and methods that have been employed to remove the material was carried out. Following this survey, an investigation of chemical solutions was undertaken to find one which might be successfully employed in the decontamination of a stainless steel steam generator. From a preliminary screening, the most promising chemical method from the view point of minimum corrosion and maximum decontamination is a caus… more

Decontamination Program Task II. Volume III, Recommended Procedure for Decontamination of a Stainless Steel Steam Generator

Description: Abstract: A decontamination procedure for a stainless steel steam generator similar to the APPR-1 using a fill-flush application of a caustic permanganate-citrate combination solution is recommended. The isolation of the steam generator is to be accomplished by means of specially designed plugs at the reactor vessel outlet and at the primary coolant pumps. Anticipated results, including corrosion rates and decontamination factors, are presented.

Comparative Costs Of Sea Disposal And Land Burial For The Radioactive Wastes Of The Lawrence Radiation Laboratory

Description: This report is a comparative cost study of radioactive waste disposal for the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory (UCRL). In particular, it compares the costs of sea disposal in depths of 1000 fathoms and of 2000 fathoms off the California coast with land burial of the wastes at the Hanford Atomic Products Operation (HAPO), Richland, Washington, at the National Reactor Testing Station (NRTS), Idaho Falls, Idaho, or at the Nevada Test Site (NTS), Nevada. In the comparison, the cost of utilizing a comm… more

Measurement Of Average Neutron Energies For (o, n) Neutron Sources

Description: A method is presented for measuring the average energy of the neutrons from a source. The attenuation of the neutrons by polyethylene is measured by the use of a long counter in good geometry. The attenuation length is a sensitive function of the neutron energy. The average neutron energies from several (o, n) sources have been measured and agree well with values obtained by other techniques.

Techniques Used For The Production And Identification Of The Transplutonium Elements

Description: The last fifteen years have seen the discovery of ten transuranic elements. This paper (presented at the Mendeleev Chemistry Conference in Moscow) deals only with the transplutonium elements, i.e., those elements with atomic number greater than 94. This will be a detailed discussion of the techniques that have been devised for producing and identifying elements 101 and 102 and the possible applications of these methods to elements beyond. There will also be a brief review of the discovery of al… more

Recent Research On Transplutonium Elements

Description: It is the purpose of this paper (from a talk given at Mendeleev Chemistry Conference in Moscow) to give a brief progress report on work which is being done on very heavy elements at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley. The subject matter is divided into three broad classifications. The first classification includes production of the isotopes, the second deals with investigations of their chemical properties and the third includes studies of the nuclear properties.

The Cross Section For Compound-Nucleus Formation In Heavy-Ion-Induced Reactions

Description: With the increasing availability of accelerators capable of producing beams of heavy ions it has become useful to know the cross section for a heavy ion to form a compound nucleus by interaction with a target nucleus. The results of calculations based on two simple models are presented here in order to give some idea of the magnitude of this cross section as a function of the energy of the bombarding particle.

Evaluation Of High-Speed Two-Tube Configurations: Part I. Greater Gain-Bandwidth In Trigger Circuits Part II. Transient Analysis Of The White Cathode Follower

Description: This study is concerned with a class of circuits which employs two tubes in a series connection--sometimes referred to as the stacked-tubes connection. This study will be concerned with two configurations that have shown considerable promise in the field of high speed circuitry. In Part I a configuration called the dynamic plate load amplifier is dealt with. In Part II a configuration called the White cathode follower is examined.

Investigation Of Windows And Shields For Neutron Point Sources

Description: An empirical approach for the evaluation of shielding materials for macrochemical manipulations of spontaneously fissioning heavy elements (curium and californium) has revealed interesting comparisons. High-density metal halide solutions were compared with lead glass and with rare earth glass for use as shielding windows. Laminated shields of lead-paraffin and uranium-paraffin were compared with water and with paraffin for shielding walls.

II. K+ Charge Exchange - Production Of Ko Mesone By Charge Exchange Of K+ In Propane

Description: In another paper there was reported an attempt to observe the charge-exchange process in a counter-triggered multiplate cloud chamber at the Bevatron but the interpretation was ambiguous. Shortly after the close of that experiment the 30-in. propane bubble chamber at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory was completed and able to be used for a combined engineering test and experiment. The existence of Reaction (1) has been confirmed in this experiment, and an approximate cross-section value for car… more

A Radiofrequency Separator For High-Energy Particles

Description: This report is an outgrowth of the MURA Users' Conference of June 1959. At that conference the group on beam separators discussed the problem of whether particle separation could be achieved at the machine energies under consideration. A preliminary version of the scheme outlined here was given at the conference. Later, after flaws were discovered, it was modified. The attempt is not to show that this is the way it should be done, but to show with reasonable certainty that there is at least one… more

1. K+ Charge Exchange - Search For K+ Charge Exchange

Description: An experiment was designed utilizing a charge-exchange reaction to study the decay and interactions of the neutral K mesons produced. The experiment produced no events that could be interpreted as either the decay or interaction of neutral K mesons. The nature of the experiment and the possible explanations of this unexpected result are presented in this paper.
