EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIFE: SOME ORGANIC CONSTITUENTS OF METEORITES ANDTHEIR SIGNIFICANCE FOR POSSIBLE EXTRATERRESTRIAL BIOLOGICALEVOLUTION

Description: In order to decide the value and type of information to be obtained from outer space with regard to its pertinence for the evolution of life, a brief review is presented of the current status of our thinking on the origin of life on earth. This points up the particular kinds of chemicals whose presence, or absence, on other astral bodies might be significant. Heretofore, the only data available are the result of telescopic spectroscopy. We report here information indicating the presence in mete… more

ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES OF ORGANIC SOLIDS. I. KINETICS AND MECHANISMOF CONDUCTIVITY OF METAL-FREE PHTHALOCYANINE

Description: Techniques involving the use of high-intensity short-duration light pulses have been applied t o the study of the kinetics of photoconductivity in films of metal-free phthalocyanine. These experiments, in conjunction with measurements of steady-state photoconductivity, are consistent with the following scheme. The principal route for the formation of charge carriers is via the first excited singlet state, although the lowest triplet state can, t o some extent, contribute to charge - carrier pro… more

PHASE SHIFTS IN pi+ -p SCATTERING AT 310 Mev

Description: In an experimental program recently completed at the 184-inch synchrocyclotron in Berkeley, data were obtained on elastic {pi}{sup +}-p scattering at a laboratory energy of 310 Mev. Quantities measured were the differential cross section, the total cross section, and the polarization of the recoil protons as a function of center-of-mass angle. We have analyzed the data in terms of S, P, and D waves and have obtained only one acceptable solution. The resultant set of phase shifts is of the Fermi… more

ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES OF ORGANIC SOLIDS. II: EFFECTS OF ADDEDELECTRON ACCEPTOR ON METAL-FREE PHTHALOCYANINE

Description: The addition of ortho-chloranil to the surface of films of metal-free phthalocyanine has been found (a) to increase the dark conductivity of such films by as much as 10{sup 7}, (b) to increase the steady-state photoconductivity by as much as 10{sup 5}, and (c) to result in the formation of unpaired electrons whose concentration decreases reversibly as a result of illumination. These systems exhibit a light-induced polarization, the phthalocyanine layer becoming more positive with respect t o th… more

CARBOXYLATIONS AND DECARBOXYLATIONS

Description: A brief survey of decarboxylation reactions and carboxylation reactions that are known or presumed in biological systems will be presented. While a considerable number of amino acid decarboxylations are known, their mechanisms will not be included in the present discussion but will be reserved for a later paper in the symposium. The remaining decarboxylation reactions may be subdivided into oxidative and nonoxidative decarboxylations. In most cases, these reactions are practically irreversible … more

High-Frequency Titration as Applied to the Determination of Thorium, Uranium, Sulfate, and Free Acid. Parts 1-51

Description: The technique of high-frequency titrimetry was applied to the determination of thorium, uranium, sulfate, and free acid. In Part I, the reproducibility of the method for the titration of standard solutions that contained 50 rag of thorium in the absence of interferences is established. Under these conditions, the coefficient of variation of the method was <1%. In Part II, the effect of uranium on the highfrequency titration of thorium, as well as the application of the method to actual samples,… more

Chemical Technology Division, Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report for June 1959

Description: The addition of a surface active agent to an aqueousorganic interface produced a resistance to mass transfer equivalent to slightly more than 1 cm of water. Five semicontinuous Druhm runs were made with 1/2-in. thick MgO liners and terminated due to either failures of the UF/sub 6/ nozzle or a top gasket leak. In preliminary scale-up tests of the flame calcination equipment, a maximum feed rate equivalent to 720 g oxides/hr was achieved using a 3-in. i.d. magnesia reflector with an outside wall… more

COUPLED TRANSMISSION LINES

Description: >Tests on a coupled transmission line resonator show that a fairly accurate value of the coupling coefficient can be predicted by considering line geometry. The measured values of V/sub 02/ and I/sub 02/ appear to agree with predicted values. Development of a resonator for ORIC with two coupled transmission lines is under way. (W.L.H.)

ORBIT DYNAMICS IN THE SPIRAL-RIDGED CYCLOTRON

Description: Formulas are derived for the equilibrium orbit, isochronous condition, vertical and horizontal betatron frequencies, and for the effects of the 3/3 radial resonance in a three-fold geometry. The magnetic field is represented by a Fourier series in azimuth with amplitudes expanded in a Taylor series about the reference radius. The form is such that the various parameters may be deduced from an arbitrary set of field measurements in the median plane and the results obtained by direct substitution… more

THEORETICAL STUDY OF SINGLE-TRANSFER LINE CONCATENATED PULSE DOLUMN SYSTEMS

Description: Calculations indicate that single-transfer line concatenated pulse column systems can be operated with static pressures that are not excessive if a sufficient number of vessels are employed in the system. The required number of vessels can be attained by using a series of short columns or by using holdup pots in conjunction with a limited number of columns. General equations for calculating pressure drops and power requirements are presented. (auth)
