Description: Experiments conducted during this past quarter demonstrated the decided difference both in amount and composition of the gas produced from the fermentation of ozonated versus unozonated yeast-plant SSL. Gas from ozonated SSL averaged over 80% methane content while unozonated effluent was mostly carbon dioxide. Future aircraft and potential effects on stratospheric ozone and climate

UV action spectra for mammalian systems: their implications for the predicted effects of ozone depletion on skin cancer incidence

Studies of air pollution effects on vegetation

Description: The report consists of three parts which summarize pollutant-vegetation effects research studies. Studies defining interactions between hypertension and air pollutants

Ozone mass transfer and kinetics experiments

Description: Experiments were conducted at the Hanford Site to determine the most efficient pH and temperature levels for the destruction of complexants in Hanford high-level defense waste. These complexants enhance migration of radionuclides in the soil and inhibit the growth of crystals in the evaporator-crystallizer. Ozone mass transfer and kinetics tests have been outlined for the determination of critical mass transfer and kinetics parameters of the ozone-complexant reaction.

Description: Effort during the past quarter was directed at two specific objectives. First, the conversion of the protein production experiments from batch to continuous operation and, second, the identification of growth stimulants to increase methane yield. Early in the project, yeast production ranging from 0.5 to 5.0 grams of dry yeast per liter had been obtained in batch cultures. Description: The effect of ozone treatment on spent sulfite liquor yeast plant effluent was studied. A 500 ml capacity packed column was constructed to efficiently react ozone with spent sulfite liquor (SSL) on a continuous flow basis. The SSL was reacted at pH 3.0 for 3 hours averaging an ozone consumption of 12.8 gm/1. Field determinations of HVdc ozone production rates

Description: The environment near a high voltage direct current (HVdc) transmission line experiences corona effects, including the production of oxidants. Comparative evaluation of effects of ozonated and chlorinated thermal discharges on estuarine and freshwater organisms

Description: Although limited, the results of tests evaluating the comparative effects of chlorinated and ozonated thermal discharges on mummichog and white perch indicate that the biological effects of ozonation are much less severe than those of chlorination. The data also show white perch to be more sensitive than mummichog to the tested biocides.
