Wave propagation in viscoelastic media

Description: The mathematical formulations of the wave propagation problem in a linear viscoelastic solid are reviewed from the point of view of constitutive equations and the theory of linear physical systems. Various general results from the theory of propagating singular surfaces and from the mathematical theory of hyperbolic equations are applied to the analysis of the wave propagation process. The impulse responses of three viscoelastic media are analyzed by use of asymptotic methods. The three materia… more

Estimated airborne release of plutonium from Westinghouse Cheswick site as a result of postulated damage from severe wind and seismic hazard

Description: The potential airborne releases of plutonium (source terms) from postulated damage sustained by the Westinghouse Plutonium Fuel Development Laboratories at the Cheswick site in Pennsylvania as a result of various levels of wind and seismic hazard are estimated. The source terms are based on damage scenarios originated by other specialists and range up to 260 mph for wind hazard and in excess of 0.39 g ground acceleration for seismic hazard. The approaches and factors used to estimate the source… more

Operation of a telemetered seismic network on the Alaska Peninsula

Description: Operation and maintenance of the network, on the Alaska Peninsula and the southern offshore area between the Semidi Islands and the western coast of Kodiak island, are discussed first; plans for improvements are presented. Some of the data obtained during the past few years are shown, and interpretations of the results are given. An understanding of the seismotectonics of the area is important for assessing its geothermal potential and evaluating the seismic risk. 10 figures. (RWR)

Simplified design methods for nonlinear dynamic mechanical systems

Description: Dimensional analysis and classical methods are combined in a novel way to develop a simplified mathematical description of two practical nonlinear dynamic mechanical systems experiencing excitation similar to that due to an earthquake. This method is used to obtain system descriptions in closed algebraic form with appropriate constants. The number of constants provides the designer with the minimum number of complex time-history analyses (or tests) required to characterize the systems completel… more

Gas Centrifuge Enrichment Plant Seismic Time History Development

Description: The objective of this study is to generate a number of artificial-spectrum consistent-time histories for use in the seismic analysis of the Gas Centrifuge Enrichment Plant (GCEP) service modules (SM). The method used in the generation of the artificial time histories presented in this report makes use of the fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm to modify the Fourier frequency spectrum of a recorded accelerogram. The response spectrum of the generated accelerogram is consistent with the spectr… more

On-line structural response analysis: using the extended Kalman estimator/identifier

Description: This report disucsses the development of on-line state and parameter estimators used to analyze the structural response of buildings. The estimator/identifier is an extended Kalman filter (EKF), which has been applied with great success in other technological areas. It is shown that the EKF can perform quite well on simulated noisy structural response data.

Statistical analysis of the correlation of earthquakes with radon concentration in water from shallow wells near Oroville, California

Description: This work is part of an investigation to determine whether a statistical relationship exists between varying radon concentration in well waters and the occurrence of nearby earthquakes. If such a dependence is verified, then certain patterns of changing radon activity may be useful for predicting earthquakes. Radon concentration in two water wells near Oroville, California, the Prosise and the Gilley wells, were compared with periodic aftershocks of the August 1, 1975, Oroville earthquake for a… more

Crane Creek known geothermal resource area: an environmental analysis

Description: The Crane Creek known geothermal resource area (KGRA) is located in Washington County, in southwestern Idaho. Estimated hydrothermal resource temperatures for the region are 166/sup 0/C (Na-K-Ca) and 176/sup 0/C (quartz). The KGRA is situated along the west side of the north-south trending western Idaho Fault Zone. Historic seismicity data for the region identify earthquake activity within 50 km. The hot springs surface along the margin of a siliceous sinter terrace or in adjacent sediments. Ap… more

Regionalization of ground motion attenuation in the conterminous United States

Description: Attenuation results from geometric spreading and from absorption. The former is almost independent of crustal geology or physiographic region. The latter depends strongly on crustal geology and the state of the earth's upper mantle. Except for very high-frequency waves, absorption does not affect ground motion at distances less than 25 to 50 km. Thus, in the near-field zone, the attenuation in the eastern United States will be similar to that in the western United States. Most of the difference… more

Statistical analysis of earthquake ground motion parameters

Description: Several earthquake ground response parameters that define the strength, duration, and frequency content of the motions are investigated using regression analyses techniques; these techniques incorporate statistical significance testing to establish the terms in the regression equations. The parameters investigated are the peak acceleration, velocity, and displacement; Arias intensity; spectrum intensity; bracketed duration; Trifunac-Brady duration; and response spectral amplitudes. The study pr… more

Nonlinear response to the multiple sine wave excitation of a softening--hardening system. [HTGR]

Description: In studying the earthquake response of the HTGR core, it was observed that the system can display softening--hardening characteristics. This is of great consequence in evaluating the structural safety aspects of the core. In order to obtain a better understanding of the governing parameters, an investigation was undertaken with a single-degree-of-freedom system having a softening--hardening spring characteristic and excited by multiple sine waves. A parametric study varying the input amplitudes… more

Vulcan Hot Springs known geothermal resource area: an environmental analysis

Description: The Vulcan Hot Springs known geothermal resource area (KGRA) is one of the more remote KGRAs in Idaho. The chemistry of Vulcan Hot Springs indicates a subsurface resource temperature of 147/sup 0/C, which may be high enough for power generation. An analysis of the limited data available on climate, meteorology, and air quality indicates few geothermal development concerns in these areas. The KGRA is located on the edge of the Idaho Batholith on a north-trending lineament which may be a factor i… more

Seismic safety in nuclear-waste disposal

Description: Seismic safety is one of the factors that must be considered in the disposal of nuclear waste in deep geologic media. This report reviews the data on damage to underground equipment and structures from earthquakes, the record of associated motions, and the conventional methods of seismic safety-analysis and engineering. Safety considerations may be divided into two classes: those during the operational life of a disposal facility, and those pertinent to the post-decommissioning life of the faci… more
