The effect of concentrated loads on flexible rings in circular shells

Description: Report presenting a method of making strain measurements on a series of circular cylinders with reinforcing rings, subjected to concentrated loads, in which the bending stiffness of the rings was varied systematically over a wide range. Results regarding the general remarks, bending-moment coefficient, and skin shear coefficients are provided.

Stresses around rectangular cut-outs with reinforced coaming stringers

Description: Strain measurements and strength tests were made on six skin-stringer panels under axial load. Three of these panels had short rectangular cut-outs, and three a long one. The width of the cut-out was about one-half of the width of the panel. Three types of coating stringers were used: without reinforcement, with riveted-up reinforcement, or with integral reinforcement. The strain measurements were found to be in good agreement with a previously published theory adapted where necessary by making… more

Strain Measurements on Small Duralumin Box Beams in Bending

Description: "Extensive strain-gage measurements were made chiefly on the tension side of five small rectangular box beams constructed of sheet duralumin. The main conclusion was that within the test range the tension cover may be considered as being fully effective but that at any given point on the beam there may be unaccountable variations of 5 percent from the calculated stresses on the thicker sheets tested (0.044 and 0.023 inch) and of 10 percent or more on the thinnest sheet tested (0.014 inch)" (p. … more

The strength of plane web systems in incomplete diagonal tension

Description: Report presenting two series of diagonal-tension beams with double uprights tested to destruction while strain measurements were being made at a large number of points. On the basis of a revised formula, more than 100 tests made by five manufacturers were analyzed.

A Special Investigation to Develop a General Method for Three-Dimensional Photoelastic Stress Analysis

Description: The method of strain measurement after annealing is reviewed and found to be satisfactory for the materials available in this country. A new general method is described for the photoelastic determination of the principal stresses at any point of a general body subjected to arbitrary load. The method has been applied to a sphere subjected to diametrical compressive loads. The results show possibilities of high accuracy.

Investigations on the Incompletely Developed Plane Diagonal-Tension Field

Description: This report presents the results of an investigation on the incompletely developed diagonal-tension field. Actual diagonal-tension beams work in an intermediate stage between pure shear and pure diagonal tension; the theory developed by Wagner for diagonal tension is not directly applicable.
