Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Effects of Spoilers on the Characteristics of a Low-Drag Airfoil Equipped With a 0.25-Chord Slotted Flap

Description: Report discussing the effects of circular-arc spoilers on the section characteristics of an NACA 66,2-216 airfoil with a 0.25-chord slotted flap. Spoilers were tested on the upper surface of the airfoil, on the lower surface, and on both simultaneously. Only the simultaneous placement of spoilers was found to provide satisfactory results as a lateral control device.

The High-Speed Characteristics of Several Flaps and Spoilers on the Upper Surface of the Horizontal Stabilizer of a Model of a Radial-Engine Pursuit Airplane

Description: Report discussing an investigation into several types and sizes of flaps and spoilers located forward of the elevators on the upper surface of the horizontal stabilizer of a model of a radial-engine pursuit airplane. Information about the elevator characteristics, elevator-fixed and elevator-free balance lift coefficient, and trim drag coefficient for a range of Mach numbers is provided.

Additional free-flight tests of the rolling effectiveness of several wing-spoiler arrangements at high subsonic, transonic, and supersonic speeds

Description: From Introduction: "The purpose of the present paper is to present results obtained recently relating to the characteristics of a full-span sharp-edge spoiler with an 0.02-chord projection above the wing surface at several chordwise positions and also to the relative effectiveness of the sharp-edge spoiler and a wedge-type spoiler located at the 80-percent-chord line."
