This thesis examines the portraiture of Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun and Adélaide Labille-Guiard within the context of their time. Analysis of specific portraits in American collections is provided, along with an examination of their careers: early education, Academic Royale membership, Salon exhibitions, and the French Revolution. Methods and Meditations upon Portraiture: Inside Out

In this proposed study, I had hoped to discover new strategies to develop imagery. I also wanted to know if using strategies in my work that expressed the psyche of myself, would work to express the psyche of other people. By using new and old strategies, I wanted to see not only if the outside face of people in photographs could be misread but if the inside face of people could be expressed.

Portraits of Undocumented Latino College Graduates Through a Lens of Resiliency Theory

Life-Sized Mixed Media Figures

For my creative project I produced five life-size pieces consisting of human and animal figures constructed in clay and mixed media. Rather than creating figures around or as part of an environment, the figure, being the primary subject, dictated what type and how much of an environment I built. I explored the manipulation of the materials in order to determine how best to produce emotional impact.

Embodied Acts of Resistance: Portraits of Urban Breastfeeding Mothers

This dissertation examines how breastfeeding mothers develop distinct geographies due to the stigma, symbolic and structural violence they encounter while breastfeeding if different spaces.
