Hyperdeformed nuclei and the residual pseudo-SU(3) symmetry

Description: The author discusses superdeformed and hypothetical hyperdeformed nuclei. Quadrupole deformations characteristic of these types of nuclei are defined. Symmetry features are also discussed. The characteristic cycle dependence of shell structures as functions of the deformation gives rise to chains of the deformed shell closures. The P-Factor and Atomic Mass Systematics: Application to Medium Mass Nuclei

Description: The P formalism was applied to atomic mass systematics for medium and heavy nuclei. The P-factor linearizes the structure-dependent part of the nuclear mass in those regions which are free from subshell effects indicating that the attractive quadrupole p-n force plays an important role in determining the binding of valence nucleons. Effect of the self-pumped limiter concept on the tritium fuel cycle

Description: The self-pumped limiter concept for impurity control of the plasma of a fusion reactor has a major impact on the design of the tritium systems. High-resolution neutron transmission measurements on /sup 235/U, /sup 239/Pu, and /sup 238/U

Description: High-resolution transmission measurements have been made on three sample thicknesses of both /sup 235/U and /sup 239/Pu at liquid nitrogen temperature and also on three of /sup 238/U at room temperature using neutrons from the water-moderated ORELA target. Some recent observations on the radiation behavior of uranium silicide dispersion fuel

Description: Addition of B{sub 4}C burnable poison results in higher plate swelling in both U{sub 3}Si{sub 2} and U{sub 3}Si-Al dispersion fuel plates and also decreases the blister threshold temperature of these plates. Prolonged annealing of U{sub 3}Si{sub 2}-Al fuel plates produced no blister after 696 hours at 400{degrees}C. A tritium-compatible piezoelectric valve for the tokamak fusion test reactor

Description: This work describes modifications made to a commercial piezoelectric valve to make it sufficiently tritium compatible for the TFTR trritium injection scenario. The results of testing the valve for leakage and performance following a series of progressively more severe tritium exposures are also presented. Preliminary risks associated with postulated tritium release from production reactor operation
