Application of the Extended Pairing Model to Heavy Isotopes

Description: The binding energies of three isotopic chains ({sup 100-130}Sn, {sup 152-181}Yb, and {sup 181-202}Pb) are studied using the extended pairing model. By using the exact solvability of the model one determines the pairing strength G(A) that reproduces the experimental binding energies. For these isotopic chains, log (G(A)) has a smooth systematic behavior. In particular, G(A) for the Pb and Sn isotopes can be described by a two parameter expression that is inversely proportional to the dimensional… more

The cascade ICF reactor with an x-ray and debris shield and a heavy-ion driver

Description: The use of a 1-kg solid-lithium x-ray and debris shield around each fusion fuel pellet prevents vaporization of, and destructive shock waves in, the Cascade blanket granules thereby increasing their lifetime. The shield vaporizes as it absorbs energy and the vapor flows into the blanket several centimeters. The shield also increases tritium breeding and enhances vacuum pumping of high Z materials that are vaporized in the fuel pellet. Using heavy ion beams allows illumination of the fuel pellet… more

Debris collection from implosion of microballoons

Description: Recovery of krypton from implosion of glass microballoons has been studied in the development of a radiochemical diagnostic for determination of <rho r> /sub fuel/. Collection onto metal surfaces following implosions performed on the OMEGA laser with 1-3 TW (1-2 kJ) of 0.35 ..mu..m light is consistent with an ion implantation mechanism. The dependence of the intrinsic collection efficiency on the energy fluence to the collector surface and its variation in implosions carried out under the same … more

Excitation of a quantal and a classical gas in a time-dependent potential

Description: We report on computer simulations of oscillating Woods-Saxon or cavity potentials filled with either a classical or a quantal gas of independent particles. We have now available of the order of 600 excitation histories of such gases undergoing usually one period of oscillation (but sometimes several), classified according to frequency and multipolarity of the oscillation and of the degree of diffuseness of the potential. We are still in the process of displaying and interpreting some of the res… more

Experiments in Cold Fusion

Description: The work of Steve Jones and others in muon-catalyzed cold fusion of deuterium and hydrogen suggests the possibility of such fusion catalyzed by ions, or combinations of atoms, or more-or-less free electrons in solid and liquid materials. A hint that this might occur naturally comes from the heat generated in volcanic action in subduction zones on the earth. It is questionable whether the potential energy of material raised to the height of a midocean ridge and falling to the depth of an ocean t… more

Final Technical Report for "Ice nuclei relation to aerosol properties: Data analysis and model parameterization for IN in mixed-phase clouds" (DOE/SC00002354)

Description: Clouds play an important role in weather and climate. In addition to their key role in the hydrologic cycle, clouds scatter incoming solar radiation and trap infrared radiation from the surface and lower atmosphere. Despite their importance, feedbacks involving clouds remain as one of the largest sources of uncertainty in climate models. To better simulate cloud processes requires better characterization of cloud microphysical processes, which can affect the spatial extent, optical depth and li… more

The Gamma-ray Albedo of the Moon

Description: We use the GEANT4 Monte Carlo framework to calculate the {gamma}-ray albedo of the Moon due to interactions of cosmic ray (CR) nuclei with moon rock. Our calculation of the albedo spectrum agrees with the EGRET data. We show that the spectrum of {gamma}-rays from the Moon is very steep with an effective cutoff around 3-4 GeV (600 MeV for the inner part of the Moon disk) and exhibits a narrow pion-decay line at 67.5 MeV, perhaps unique in astrophysics. Apart from other astrophysical sources, the… more

Hartree-Fock Mean-Field Models Using Separable Interactions

Description: An effective two-body nuclear interaction is presented which is a sum of terms separable in coordinate space. Calculations are made using this interaction of some doubly closed-shell spherical nuclei using many-body perturbation theory with the Hartree-Fock state as a reference state. It is demonstrated that the interaction gives good bulk properties in finite nuclei.

International safeguards: Accounting for nuclear materials

Description: Nuclear safeguards applied by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are one element of the non-proliferation regime'', the collection of measures whose aim is to forestall the spread of nuclear weapons to countries that do not already possess them. Safeguards verifications provide evidence that nuclear materials in peaceful use for nuclear-power production are properly accounted for. Though carried out in cooperation with nuclear facility operators, the verifications can provide assuran… more
