Studies of the dissolution of geothermal scale

Description: Samples of geothermal scale formed from Magmamax No. 1 and Woolsey No. 1 wells in the Imperial Valley, Calif., were exposed to concentrated and dilute solutions of common laboratory reagents. The time of exposure and temperature of the reagent were also varied. Several reagents easily dissolved significant amounts of the scale. An in situ test was performed with marginal success.

Buffon needle method of track counting

Description: A new technique of quantitative track counting, the Buffon needle method, is advanced. It is based on random sampling of the solid state track recorder (SSTR) surface. This new method extends quantitative track scanning to track densities well up into the track pile-up regime. It is shown that the Buffon needle method possesses a reduced dependence upon both track density nonuniformity and track size distribution. Soft x-ray detection with diamond photoconductive detectors

Description: Photoconductive detectors fabricated from natural lla diamonds have been used to measure the x-ray power emitted from laser produced plasmas. The detector was operated without any absorbing filters to distort the x-ray power measurement. The 5.5 eV bandgap of the detector material practically eliminates its sensitivity to scattered laser radiation thus permitting filterless operation. DT fusion neutron irradiation of LLL Nb--1 Zr tensile specimens, BNL-LASL superconductor wires, BPNL wire-foil packet, ORNL magnesium oxide crystals, LASL spinel, YAG, Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and MgO, and LLL LiF and glass microscope cover slides

Description: The DT fusion neutron irradiation of eight LLL Nb-1Zr tensile specimens, eleven BNL-LASL superconductor wires, one BPNL wire-foil packet, two ORNL magnesium oxide crystals, four LASL high purity single crystals, one each of spinel, YAG, Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and MgO, one LLL bicrystal of LiF and several LLL glass microscope cover slides is described. The sample position, beam-on time and dose record are given. The maximum neutron fluence on any sample was 2.51 x 10/sup 17/ neutrons/cm/sup 2/.

Description: Direct aqueous mineral carbonation has been investigated as a process to convert gaseous CO{sub 2} into a geologically stable, solid final form. The process utilizes a solution of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO{sub 3}), sodium chloride (NaCl), and water, mixed with a mineral reactant, such as olivine (Mg{sub 2}SiO{sub 4}) or serpentine [Mg{sub 3}Si{sub 2}O{sub 5}(OH){sub 4}]. Investigation of mineral transformations and ash deposition during staged combustion. Quarterly technical progress report, January 1, 1995--March 31, 1995

Description: Progress during the sixth quarter of a three-year study was made in two task areas: (1) parametric testing of the target coals, and (2) analysis of samples from the combustion tests.
