TRAC L reactor model: Geometry review and benchmarking

Description: The analysis of the Design Basis Loss of Coolant Acident (LOCA) for Savannah River Site (SRS) reactors involves the best estimate reactor system thermal-hydraulics code TRAC-PFI/MOD1. Power levels for the L-3.1 and P-10.2 subcycles were determined based, in part, on TRAC analyses of the first few seconds of a plenum inlet break LOCA. The TRAC code is currently being used to analyze reactor system response for the Double Ended Guillotine Break (DEGB) LOCA, the Expansion Joint Bellows Break LOCA,… more

Communication of emergency public warnings: A social science perspective and state-of-the-art assessment

Description: More than 200 studies of warning systems and warning response were reviewed for this social science perspective and state-of-the-art assessment of communication of emergency public warnings. The major findings are as follows. First, variations in the nature and content of warnings have a large impact on whether or not the public heeds the warning. Relevant factors include the warning source; warning channel; the consistency, credibility, accuracy, and understandability of the message; and the w… more

Geochemical and physical properties of soils and shallow sediments at the Savannah River Site

Description: A program to characterize the geochemical and physical properties of the unimpacted soils and shallow sediments at the Savannah River Site (SRS) has been completed. The maximum, minimum, median, standard deviation, and mean values for metals, radionuclides, inorganic anions, organic compounds, and agricultural indicator parameters are summarized for six soil series that were identified as representative of the 29 soil series at SRS. The soils from unimpacted areas of SRS are typical of soils fo… more

The structure and dynamics of patterns of Benard convection cells

Description: Benard-Marangoni convection, in containers with large aspect ratio, exhibits space-filling cellular structures, highly deformable, but crystallized. They contain dislocations and grain boundaries generated and moved by elementary topological transformations, and are subjected to a weak shear stress due to the earth's rotation. The cellular structure and its fluctuations are analyzed from a crystallographic viewpoint, by using two complementary approaches. One is a global analysis of cellular st… more

National energy strategy: Recent studies comparing the health impacts of energy technologies

Description: The human health impacts of energy technologies arise mostly from routine emissions of pollutants and from traumatic accidents, which may also release pollutants. The natures and magnitudes of the risks differ among technologies -- they are a lot different for some -- and so the differences must be included in any evaluation of their relative merits. Based on the characteristics of their health risks, energy technologies can be classified into three groups: The fuel group, the renewable resourc… more

Development of standardized air-blown coal gasifier/gas turbine concepts for future electric power systems

Description: Computer models have been developed for evaluating conceptual designs of integrated coal gasification combined cycle power plants. An overall system model was developed for performing thermodynamic cycle analyses, and detailed models were developed for predicting performance characteristics of fixed bed coal gasifiers and hot gas clean up subsystem components. The overall system model performs mass and energy balances and does chemical equilibrium analyses to determine the effects of changes in… more

Unsaturated zone moisture and vapor movement induced by temperature variations in asphalt barrier field lysimeters

Description: Protective barriers are being considered for use at the Hanford Site to enhance the isolation of radioactive wastes from water, plant, and animal intrusion. Lysimeters were constructed to evaluate the performance of asphalt barrier formulations under natural environmental conditions. These lysimeters were constructed of 1.7-m lengths of PVC pipe that have a diameter of 30 cm. The lysimeters were filled with layers of gravel, coarse sand, and asphalt. The sand and gravel placed under the asphalt… more

Remote sensing and hydrologic modeling of arid watersheds: A scale analysis

Description: The increasing availability of digital elevation data (DED) created from remotely sensed data has promoted the development of computer algorithms for the calculation of geomorphometric properties of the land surface. These include parameters that are tedious or impossible to do by hand, for example, stream properties by order and flow path mapping for every location within the drainage basin. Flow paths especially are critical for water routing in hydrologic models. These algorithms can be used… more

Examination of coherency criteria for high velocity jets

Description: An examination of a coherency criteria for high velocity jets is discussed in this paper. An analysis of the classical Pugh, Eichelberger, Rostoker jetting theory is used to develop an equation that defines the maximum coherent jet velocity as a function of the liner material sound speed, the liner beta angle, and the magnitude direction of the liner collapse velocity vector. The liner material sound speed is assumed to be the liner material shock velocity at the time of liner material collapse… more

CANVAS: C++ objects for easy graphics on an Evans and Sutherland PS390 terminal

Description: The C++ classes described in this note comprise an attempt to provide an object-oriented approach, and if there was ever a graphics terminal naturally suited to object-oriented programming, the PS390 is it. Since a canvas is not a program but a variable to be used in programs, users can write software to suit their particular needs. By simply declaring canvas variables the application program is provided with an object which accepts data and displays it automatically. Any number of canvases can… more

Covers by polars of arrangements

Description: For a collection of hyperplanes passing through the origin in euclidean space let S be the induced subdivision. Let T be the collection of polars of the full cells of S. If only the origin lies in all hyperplanes, T forms a {kappa} {approximately} fold cover of euclidean space. If, in addition, the collection of hyperplanes is of size m and is regular, then {kappa} is m {minus} 1 choose n {minus} 1. Other similar results relate to spheres, hemispheres, and linear programming.
