Environmental assessment of remedial action at the Gunnison Uranium Mill Tailings Site, Gunnison, Colorado. [UMTRA Project]

Description: This document assesses and compares the environmental impacts of various alternatives for remedial action at the Gunnison uranium of mill tailings site located 0.5 miles south of Gunnison, Colorado. The site covers 56 acres and contains 35 acres of tailings, 2 of the original mill buildings and a water tower. The Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control of Act of 1978 (UMTRCA), Public Law 95-604, authorizes the US Department of Energy to clean up the site to reduce the potential health impacts a… more

Mode-locking and the transition to chaos in dissipative systems

Description: Dissipative systems with two competing frequencies exhibit transitions to chaos. We have investigated the transition through a study of discrete maps of the circle onto itself, and by constructing and analyzing return maps of differential equations representing some physical systems. The transition is caused by interaction and overlap of mode-locked resonances and takes place at a critical line where the map losses invertibility. At this line the mode-locked intervals trace up a complete Devil'… more

Nonrelativistic theory of heavy-ion collisions

Description: A wide range of phenomena is observed in heavy-ion collisions, calling for a comprehensive theory based on fundamental principles of many-particle quantum mechanics. At low energies, the nuclear dynamics is controlled by the mean field, as we know from spectroscopic nuclear physics. We therefore expect the comprehensive theory of collisions to contain mean-field theory at low energies. The mean-field theory is the subject of the first lectures in this chapter. This theory can be studied quantum… more

Hydrodynamic flow structures in quantum field theory

Description: The transport of matter is examined in the context of relativistic quantum transport theory for the case of neutral scalar fields. The goal is to formulate a theory valid off mass shell and out of equilibrium. We construct a conserved moment tensor which coincides with the ensemble average of the Noether tensor, or the improved energy-momentum tensor within an additive constant of the improvement term. Conditions for closure of the conservation equation are given for the phi/sup 4/ coupling. 8 … more

Electron energy transport and magnetic curvature driven modes

Description: A transport coefficient for anomalous electron thermal conduction is constructed on the basis of the so-called Principle of Profile Consistency. It is assumed that the relevant modes in plasma where a substantial fraction of the electron population is magnetically trapped produce magnetic reconnection at a microscopic level and are driven by the combined effects of the plasma pressure gradient and the magnetic field curvature. Consequently, the scaling for the electron energy confinement time e… more

Investigation of single-substance horizontal two-phase flow

Description: Despite the abundance of work in the field of two-phase flow, it seems as though a consensus has not been reached on some of the fundamental points. Although exceptions exist, adequate physical interpretation of the flow seems to be hindered either by complexity of analysis or, in the opposite extreme, the trend toward limited-range analysis and correlations. The dissertation presents the derivation of basic conservation equations for the phases. The combined equations are used to examine the p… more

Initial confinement studies of ohmically heated plasmas in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor

Description: Initial operation of the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) has concentrated upon confinement studies of ohmically heated hydrogen and deuterium plasmas. Total energy confinement times (tau/sub E/) are 0.1 to 0.2 s for a line-average density range (anti n/sub e/) of 1 to 2.5 x 10/sup 19/ m/sup -3/ with electron temperatures of T/sub e/(o) approx. 1.2 to 2.2 keV, ion temperatures of T/sub i/(o) approx. 0.9 to 1.5 keV, and Z/sub eff/ approx. 3. A comparison of PLT, PDX, and TFTR plasma confinemen… more

Perturbative corrections to university and renormalization group behaviour

Description: The influence of weak coupling corrections on tests of the universality of lattice actions is discussed. The two loop corrections described in this paper were performed using the background field method. An estimate is also provided of the perturbative corrections to asymptotic scaling for the Wilson action. Monte Carlo simulation of Lattice QCD is carried out at finite, large values of the bare coupling g, but the continuum limit of the theory corresponds to vanishing g. When extracting physic… more

Energy confinement scaling in tokamaks: some implications of recent experiments with ohmic and strong auxiliary heating

Description: Recent results from confinement scaling experiments on tokamaks with ohmic and strong auxiliary heating are reviewed. An attempt is made to draw these results together into a low-density ohmic confinement scaling law, and a scaling law for confinement with auxiliary heating. The auxiliary heating confinement law may also serve to explain the saturation in tau/sub E/ vs anti n/sub e/ observed in some ohmic heating density scaling experiments.

Recent results from TFTR

Description: During the past year, the research activities on TFTR have encompassed three broad areas. The first was to extend the operating range of TFTR. Plasma currents up to 1.5 MA were achieved in discharges with a = 0.83 m, R = 2.55 m at a toroidal field of 2.7 T. In these large plasmas, the maximum line average density was 3.35 x 10/sup 19/ m/sup -3/. The second activity was a study of the scaling of the energy confinement time, tau/sub E/, in ohmically heated discharges as a function of plasma curre… more

Hydrogen vibrational population distributions and negative ion generation in tandem high-density hydrogen discharges

Description: The tandem high-density hydrogen negative-ion-source system is optimized to identify the largest possible ion concentrations and extracted ion currents. The optimization includes varying the length of the second chamber, varying neutral gas and electron densities, and varying the ratio of atomic to molecular density. Vibrational excitation occurs via high-energy electron excitation (E-V process) and H/sub 2//sup +/ surface neutralization (s-V process). These processes are considered separately … more

An Examination of The First Two Years of Implementation of the Texas Term Contract Nonrenewal Act at The State Agency Level

Description: Before the 1981 enactment of the Term Contract Nonrenewal Act in Texas, term contract teachers were entitled to a hearing only when the employment contract was terminated during the contract period or when the cause for nonrenewal was made public and had a stigmatizing effect on the reputational rights of the teacher. This new act has the effect of bridging the gap between what has been legal and what many would consider to be fundamentally fair in employment practices. The immediate impact of … more

Status of gyrotron developments at Varian Associates

Description: The status of gyrotrons developed by Varian for fusion heating applications will be briefly reviewed. Development work started in 1976 with the goal of 200 kW CW at 28 GHz. A more recent program was to develop 200 kW CW at 60 GHz. Pulsed and CW tubes produced by these programs will be briefly described and the scaling of these designs to other frequencies including 53, 56 and 70 GHz will be discussed. A 35 GHz design will also be described. Future efforts for gyrotrons at 120 and 140 GHz will a… more
