Poi

Description: Recording of John Rimmer's Poi for tape. In the piece there are two groups of pitches - one conjunct, one disjunct - which interact with each other in various percussive and string-like timbres. The movement of the music suggests the whirl and glide of the "Poi", a small flax ball, which is a part of the popular Maosi dance of the same name.

Gene sequencing by scanning molecular excitation microscopy. Progress report, June 1990--June 1993

Description: We propose to complete the development of scanning molecular excitation microscopy to rapidly sequence DNA. This new type of scanned-tip microscopy is specifically designed to map individual DNA bases in a non-destructive fashion. Base recognition is based on the external heavy atom effect between a heavy atom label on a specific DNA base and a fluorescent sensor molecule at the end of a scanned optical tip. As the tip is scanned very close to the heavy atom its emissions will change intensity … more

Performance and Reliability of Interface Materials for Automotive Power Electronics

Description: Thermal management and reliability are important because excessive temperature can degrade the performance, life, and reliability of power electronics and electric motors. Advanced thermal management technologies enable keeping temperature within limits; higher power densities; and lower cost materials, configurations and systems. Thermal interface materials, bonded interface materials and the reliability of bonded interfaces are discussed in this presentation.

The integration of cryogenic cooling systems with superconducting electronic systems

Description: The need for cryogenic cooling has been critical issue that has kept superconducting electronic devices from reaching the market place. Even though the performance of the superconducting circuit is superior to silicon electronics, the requirement for cryogenic cooling has put the superconducting devices at a disadvantage. This report will talk about the various methods for refrigerating superconducting devices. Cryocooler types will be compared for vibration, efficiency, and cost. Some solution… more

A Detailed Study of FDIRC Prototype with Waveform Digitizing Electronics in Cosmic Ray Telescope Using 3D Tracks.

Description: We present a detailed study of a novel Cherenkov imaging detector called the Focusing DIRC (FDIRC) with waveform digitizing electronics. In this test study, the FDIRC prototype has been instrumented with seven Hamamatsu H-8500 MaPMTs. Waveforms from ~450 pixels are digitized with waveform sampling electronics based on the BLAB2 ASIC, operating at a sampling speed of ~2.5 GSa/s. The FDIRC prototype was tested in a large cosmic ray telescope (CRT) providing 3D muon tracks with ~1.5 mrad angular r… more

Design Considerations for Large Mass Ultra-Low Background Experiments

Description: Summary The objective of this document is to present the designers of the next generation of large-mass, ultra-low background experiments with lessons learned and design strategies from previous experimental work. Design issues divided by topic into mechanical, thermal and electrical requirements are addressed. Large mass low-background experiments have been recognized by the scientific community as appropriate tools to aid in the refinement of the standard model. The design of these experiment… more
