High-temperature electrically conductive ceramic and method for making same

Description: It is the primary objective or aim of the present invention to provide an electrically conductive composition for the fabrication of susceptors useful for induction melting of uranium and uranium alloys and to also provide such a composition for forming crucibles and other containment vessels utilized to contain uranium at elevated temperatures. This composition does not appear to interact with molten uranium, since there is no significant reaction between the compositional consituents of the s… more

Carbonate scaling - literature review and analysis

Description: A survey of the literature on carbonate scaling is presented as it affects geothermal fluid systems. The geothermal brine, as the fluid is called, contains a number of chemical constituents which have leached into it from the reservoir rock. As the hot fluid is withdrawn through wells, a flow of steam, water, or a mixture of steam and water, results. If the well flows at a high enough rate, some brine will flash to steam because of the pressure drop, resulting in the steam/water flow mixture. T… more

Plasma processed coating of laser fusion targets

Description: Coatings for laser fusion targets have been deposited in an inductively coupled discharge device by plasma polymerization. Two feed gases were used: perfluoro-2-butene, which produced a fluorocarbon coating (CF/sub 1/ /sub 3/) with a density of 1.8 g/cc, and trans-2-butene which produced a hydrocarbon coating (CH/sub 1/ /sub 3/) with a density of 1.0 g/cc. Uniform pin-hole free films have been deposited to a thickness of up to 30 ..mu..m of fluorocarbon and up to 110 ..mu..m of hydrocarbon. The… more

New applications of high-temperature solar energy for the production of transportable fuels and chemicals and for energy storage

Description: The solar fuels and chemicals study was limited to the examination of processes requiring temperatures in excess of 1000/sup 0/K since lower temperature processes had already been examined in studies concerned with the application of waste heat from nuclear power plants to industrial processes. In developing the carbon cycle processes, the primary activity included an extensive literature search and the thermodynamic evaluation of a number of candidate chemical cycles. Although both hydrogen an… more

Potentially Hazardous Air Contaminants in the Home

Description: The health concerns of several substances likely to be encountered in the non-industrial indoor environment are discussed. Monitoring data and information on the health effects of CO, NO/sub 2/, formaldehyde, and radon are included. (JGB)

Imperial Valley Environmental Project: progress report

Description: Progress is reported in six areas of research: air quality, water quality, ecosystem quality, subsidence and seismicity, socioeconomic effects, and integrated assessment. A major goal of the air quality element is to evaluate the rate of emission of H/sub 2/S, CO/sub 2/, H/sub 2/, N/sub 2/, CH/sub 4/, and C/sub 2/H/sub 6/ from the operation of the geothermal loop experimental facility at Niland. Concentrations of H/sub 2/S were found to vary between 1500 to 4900 ppM by volume at the Niland faci… more

Flooding and mass transfer in Goodloe-packed columns. [For Kr absorption in liquid CO/sub 2/ in HTGR off-gas systems]

Description: Flooding and mass transfer experiments were performed with a CO/sub 2/-air/water system to examine mass transfer characteristics in Goodloe-packed columns of 6.4 and 15.2-cm ID for removal of radioactive Kr from HTGR off-gas. The flooding experiments verified previous correlations for the packing. The plug flow model was selected for calculation of the overall mass transfer coefficient, K/sub L/a. The correlation for K/sub L/a in terms of the molar liquid flow rate, L', is K/sub L/a = 0.359(L')… more
