Status of the lanthanides and actinides in the periodic table

Description: In extended discussions and correspondence with Ekkehard Fluck, the author was made aware of a problem with the Periodic Table, i.e., which element should be shown in the main table as the representative of the lanthanide series and the actinide series. In earlier discussion, he came to the conclusion that lanthanum and actinium are not the elements which should appear, but rather lutetium and lawrencium are more appropriate for inclusion in their place. This paper will attempt to justify the r… more

Softening of Young's modulus of polycrystalline Nb/sub 3/Sn

Description: Ultrasonic measurements show that the shear modulus (C/sub 11/-C/sub 12/)/2 softens dramatically as single crystals of Nb/sub 3/Sn approach the martensitic transition near 50K. It is expected that Young's modulus of polycrystals will olso soften, but previous ultrasonic measurements, which suffer from severe damping, fail to show the expected effect. We have measured Young's modulus of polycrystalline Nb/sub 3/Sn between 4.2K and 300K by static beam deflection methods, and observe marked soften… more

Strength of irradiated graphite: a review

Description: Experimental data on the mechanical strength of nuclear graphite subjected to fast neutron irradiation are reviewed. At fluences below the turnaround point, the mean tensile, flexural, or compressive strength, S, increases over the unirradiated value, S/sub 0/, in a manner related to the irradiation-induced change in Young's modulus, E: S/S/sub 0/ = (E/E/sub 0/)/sup K/. The exponent, k, takes a value between 0.5 and 1, depending on the graphite grade, the irradiation temperature, and the method… more

Property changes in graphite irradiated at changing irradiation temperature. [Neutrons]

Description: Design data for irradiated graphite are usually presented as families of isothermal curves showing the change in physical property as a function of fast neutron fluence. In this report, procedures for combining isothermal curves to predict behavior under changing irradiation temperatures are compared with experimental data on irradiation-induced changes in dimensions, Young's modulus, thermal conductivity, and thermal expansivity. The suggested procedure fits the data quite well and is physical… more
