Survey of selected agencies conducted to determine the extent to which the nation's coals are adequately characterized

Description: A survey was conducted to determine the extent to which the nation's coals were adequately characterized. Questionnaires were sent to 81 agencies in the coal community selected to form a representative cross section of the organizations concerned with coal characterization. Fifty-nine completed questionnaires were received. Respondents included representatives of the agencies with the longest experience in characterization and those in the best position to know the status of our knowledge … more

Variations in volatiles in magma bodies based on studies of melt inclusions

Description: Knowledge of volatile concentrations in magmas are important in the prediction of explosive volcanism, and contribute to the understanding of the carbon dioxide budget of the atmosphere. Some important variables that are controlled by volatiles are: crystallization temperature of phases, composition of liquids minimum, and viscosity. Volatiles are also catalysts for reactions.

Field evaluation of ground water sampling devices for volatile organic compounds

Description: Previous studies conducted under laboratory conditions demonstrated that the type of device used to sample ground water contaminated with volatile organic compounds can significantly influence and analytical results. The purpose of this study was to evaluate, under field conditions, both commercial and developmental ground water sampling devices as part of an ongoing ground water contamination investigation and remediation program at the Savannah River Plant (SRP). Ground water samples were col… more

Volatile production during preignition heating. Final technical report, 15 September 1980-30 September 1982

Description: Pulverized coal particles, in a flowing inert nitrogen stream, have been heated by high power Carbon Dioxide Laser. The consequence of such an irradiation have proved to be both novel and surprising as a result of the rapid quenching of primary coal products. It ahs been found that the gas phase yield from such heating (typically, temperatures in excess of 1400 K at rates approx. 2 x 10/sup 5/ K/s) is very small (< 0.2 percent of coal carbon and hydrogen). Analysis of the solid residue has show… more

Large-scale high-efficiency air stripper and recovery well network for removing volatile organic chlorocarbons from ground water

Description: The Savannah River Plant (SRP) produces special nuclear materials for the US Government. Since 1958, chemical wastes generated by an aluminum forming/metal finishing process used to manufacture fuel and target assemblies were discharged to a settling basin. This process waste stream contained acids, alkalis, metals, and chlorinated degreasing solvents. In 1981, these solvents, specifically trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene, were discovered in monitor wells near the settling basin. A mon… more

Smart'' pump and treat

Description: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is approaching the final phase of the Superfund decision-making process for site restoration and will soon initiate full scale cleanup. Despite some well-publicized failings of the pump and treat approach, we have concluded that intelligent application of this strategy if the best choice for ground water restoration at LLNL. Our proposed approach differs sufficiently from the pump and treat methods implemented at other sites that we call it smart'' … more

Nuclear waste processing based on FOOF and KrF sub 2

Description: A class of oxygen fluoride compounds and krypton difluoride show great promise in recovering and purifying plutonium and other actinides from nuclear waste and residues. Since 1983, a significant effort has been expended in three main areas of research; one area is the characterization of the reactive species and the fluorination reaction chemistry with various actinides. The second area is to develop efficient production methods for the active chemicals. The third area is actually in demonstra… more

Bromoform production in tropical open-ocean waters: OTEC chlorination

Description: The bromoform, and other volatile organics produced while chlorinating both the evaporator and condenser seawater during operation of the one megawatt (1 MW) OTEC-1 test facility are reported. Although many halogenated compounds might be produced as a result of chlorination, the quantitative analyses in this study focused on volatile EPA priority pollutants. Bromoform is the compound specifically recognized as a potential pollutant. Its concentration may be indicative of other halogenated speci… more

Oil-shale-retorting and combustion system. [DOE patent application]

Description: The present invention is directed to the extraction of energy values from oil shale containing considerable concentrations of calcium carbonate in an efficient manner. The volatiles are separated from the oil shale in a retorting zone of a fluidized bed where the temperature and the concentration of oxygen are maintained at sufficiently low levels so that the volatiles are extracted from the oil shale with minimal combustion of the volatiles and with minimal calcination of the calcium carbonate… more

Inhalation developmental toxicology studies: Teratology study of n-hexane in rats: Final report

Description: The straight chain hydrocarbon, n-hexane, is a volatile, ubiquitous solvent used in industrial, academic, and smaller commercial environments. The significant opportunity for women of child-bearing age to be exposed to this chemical prompted the undertaking of a study to assess the developmental toxicity of n-hexane in an animal model. Timed-pregnant (30 animals per group) and virgin (10 animals per group) Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to 0 (filtered air), 200, 1000, and 5000 ppM n-hexane (9… more

Description: Emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) from stationary industrial and commercial sources represent a substantial portion of the total US VOC emissions. The Toxic-Release Inventory'' of The US Environmental Protection Agency estimates this to be at about 3 billion pounds per year (1987 estimates). The majority of these VOC emissions are from coating processes, cleaning processes, polymer production, fuel production and distribution, foam blowing, refrigerant production, and wood products p… more

Description: At the Savannah River Site (SRS), from 1958--1985, effluent waste from the reactor fuel and target rod fabrication area (M-Area) was discharged to a settling basin. In 1981, monitoring wells detected groundwater contamination, specifically trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene, in the immediate vicinity of the basin. Under the auspices of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) the M-Area contamination must be addressed by a corrective action program until the volatile organic compoun… more

Using the concept of volume averaging, predictive models have been developed for these porous media properties. The Hot Wire Method was used for simultaneously measuring the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of both consolidated and unconsolidated low-rank coals. A new computer-interfaced experiment is presented and sample container designs developed for both … more

Evaluation of a rapid headspace analysis method for analysis of volatile constituents in soils and sediments

Description: Contamination of the subsurface by volatile organic solvents is a common and significant environmental problem. A critical component of developing an accurate assessment of a site contaminated by these solvents is the acquisition of closely spaced, high quality contaminant concentration data. Many volatile organics are relatively mobile in the subsurface, requiring characterization of both horizontal and vertical contaminant migration. The volatile nature of these analyses, combined with the co… more

Improved pyrolysis submodel for the Wen Fixed-Bed Gasifier Program

Description: A generalized model for devolatilization of large coal particles typically encountered in a fixed or moving bed gasifier has been developed. Two models were developed, one which does not consider diffusion of the volatile matter from the coal during devolatilization and the other which does consider diffusion of volatile species through the coal matrix. Both models predict a time-temperature history of the particle in a convective heat transfer environment.
