Progress Report on Nonaqueous Extractive Methods for Western Uranium Ores

Description: Abstract: "Dissolution of carnotite in several readily liquefiable gases, including ammonia, sulfur dioxide, chlorine, and nitrogen dioxide, was found to be negligible, even in the presence of uranium complexing agents. No low-boiling liquids have been found which will dissolve carnotite directly. Treatment with various sulfur chloride will convert carnotite to a form soluble in water or in certain organic solvents. Also, carnotite can be readily dissolved in HCl-acidified ethanol, methanol, or… more

Progress Report on Nonaqueous Extractive Methods for Western Uranium Ores

Description: The following progress reports continues the investigation of the HCl-acetone process for extracting uranium, discovering that it is applicable to most Western ores, yielding high uranium recoveries. The economics of the process have been improved by substitution of sulfuric acid for part of the hydrochloric acid requirements.

Preliminary Report on Diamond-Drill Exploration and Plans for Additional Drilling in Long Park and Vicinity, Montrose County, Colorado

Description: From abstract and summary: Long Park and vicinity is in T. 47 N., R. 17 W., Montrose County, Colo. The U. S. Geological Survey started a program of drilling in the area in April 1949, to find deposits that might be developed into new mines and to appraise the reserves of the area. This drilling was done during two periods of time under separate contracts.

Interim Report of Diamond-Drill Exploration, Club Mesa, Montrose County, Colorado

Description: From introduction: The present report summarizes the indicated and inferred reserves which have been found to date by the drilling in Club Mesa, Montrose County of New Mexico, and includes an estimate of the potential reserves predicted for the area. It also includes a statement of plans for additional drilling. A final report will be prepared on the completion of the drilling planned for 1951.

Development of an Ion Exchange Process for the Recovery of Vanadium

Description: A process for recovering vanadium from acid leach liquors by ion exchange using either columns or resin-in-pulp has been developed. The process is economically feasible, and operating techniques were developed which made the process practical from an operating standpoint. The theory, chemistry, and characteristics of the vanadium ion exchange process are fully discussed.

Resonance Absorption of Thorium

Description: Abstract: Cadmium ratios for very thin (neutron and beta-wise) foils of thorium, gold, vanadium and indium have been measured in the glory hole of the WBNS. These cadmium ratios, together with the known thermal cross sections and a given calculated resonance integral for gold, were used to evaluare the resonance integrals of thorium, vanadium, and indium.

Vanadium Deposits of Colorado and Utah: a Preliminary Report

Description: From abstract: Deposits of vanadium-bearing sandstone are widely distributed in western Colorado and eastern Utah and have been the principal domestic source of vanadium, uranium, and radium. Except during a few years when operations were relatively small, deposits at one or more places in this region have been intensively mined since 1909. Production has increased considerably each year since 1937.

The Determination of Phosphorous in Rocks Containing Vanadium

Description: From Abstract: "This paper describes a rapid routine procedure for the determination of phosphorous in the presence of vanadium. Vanadium is reduced with formic acid prior to precipitation of phosphorous as ammonium phosphomolybdate and the ammonium phosphomolybdate is weighed as such."

Appraisal of the Accuracy of U.S. Geological Survey Ore Reserve Estimates for Uranium-Vanadium Deposits on the Colorado Plateau

Description: From Abstract: "The U.S. Geological Survey has made estimates of the reserves of uranium and vanadium in the carnotite deposits explored by Geological Survey drilling on the Colorado Plateau. This report presents an appraisal of the accuracy of the reserve estimates for deposits in the Uravan mineral belt, the causes of inaccuracy, and the significance of the estimates in terms of the total known reserves of the region."
