Estimate of earth media shear strength at the Nevada Test Site

Description: A method is presented of estimating the effective shear strength of the fractured rock that surrounds a nuclear detonation. To do this, we measure the cavity radii from previous detonations. We also use numerical computer codes to model the explosion phenomenology and develop the functional relationship between the normalized cavity displacement and the normalized shear strength of the rock. Intermediate simulation of the inverse seismic problem

Description: An introductory study of the inverse seismic problem is performed. The complex cepstrum of a seismogram generated by the convolution of three factors, the Seggern-Blandford source function of an explosion, the Futterman mantle transfer function, and the SRO seismometer transfer function, is used. Application of the implicit TENSOR code to studies of containment of undergound nuclear tests

Portable, remotely operated, computer-controlled, quadrupole mass spectrometer for field use

Description: A portable, remote-controlled mass spectrometer was required at the Nevada Test Site to analyze prompt post-event gas from the nuclear cavity in support of the underground testing program. Rock equation of state: a constitutive computer model

Description: A constitutive model for a rock equation of state was developed in HEMP and CEL-HEMP computer codes. The model includes the mechanical and thermal properties of soil, such as elasticity, pore closure, compaction, and vaporization. Chemical tracers in Hybla Gold working room. Final report

Description: Chemical tracers were placed in the working room for the Hybla Gold event to aid in diagnosing flow of high-energy gases down expanding pipes leading from the room. If post-shot reentry is made, the tracers could provide valuable knowledge concerning pipe closure, mixing of gases from various locations, and volume of gas flow into various sizes of pipes.

Results from exploratory drill hole UE2ce, Northwest Yucca Flat, Nevada Test Site, near the NASH Event

Description: Exploratory drill hole UE2ce was drilled in January 1977 to determine geologic and geophysical characteristics of this site. This report presents geophysical logs, lithology, geologic structure, water table measurements, and physical properties for this drill hole. The data are then extrapolated to the NASH site, an event in U2ce, 55.6 m due north of UE2ce.
