Tritium storage development. Progress report No. 12, April--June 1977. [In metal hydride; polymer impregnated tritiated concrete]

Description: Laboratory work was continued on hydriding of zirconium sponge and rod under varying conditions of temperature (400 to 900/sup 0/C) and pressure (0-1000 torr) to determine optimum conditions for the formation of hydrides with desirable mechanical properties. Titanium sponge and rod were also hydrided for comparison. Zirconium and titanium samples containing tritium were prepared and initial leach data were obtained. Leach rates for zirconium in distilled water ranged from 1.1 x 10/sup -6/ to 4.… more

Humic substance formation during wastewater infiltration

Description: Soil infiltration of wastewater effluents is a widely practiced method of treatment and disposal/reuse throughout the world. Renovation of the wastewater results from a wide variety of complex physicochemical and biological processes. One set of processes is speculated to involve the accumulation of organic matter by filtration and sorption followed by formation of humic substances. This humic substance formation can effect the performance of soil treatment systems by contributing to soil pore … more

TRITOX: a multiple parameter evaluation of tritium toxicity

Description: The increased use of nuclear reactors for power generation will lead to the introduction of tritium into the environment. The need for assessing possible immediate and long-term effects of exposure to this tritium led to the development of a broad program directed towards evaluating the possible somatic and genetic effects of continuous exposure to tritiated water (HTO). Among the parameters measured are the genetic, cytogenetic, reproductive efficiency, growth, nonspecific lifetime shortening,… more

Fuel temperature determination for ICF microspheres

Description: The common heuristic expression for estimating thermonuclear burn in ICF microspheres far from bootstrap heating is often used for inversion to obtain peak temperatures from experimental data. It contains an ad hoc or fitted parameter and lacks some parameters of obvious influence in actual systems. We present an alternative expression, which may be usefully inverted and does not suffer these defects.

Quadrupole mass-filter sensitivities of H/sub 2/, HD, D/sub 2/, and T/sub 2/, and the kinetics of. beta. -particle induced exchange between H/sub 2/, D/sub 2/, and T/sub 2/ at 25. 4/sup 0/C

Description: We have constructed a quadrupole-mass filter system to measure the equilibrium constants and rates of reaction of the ..beta..-particle-induced exchanges between H/sub 2/, D/sub 2/, and T/sub 2/ at cryogenic temperatures. Even with careful calibration experiments at 25.4/sup 0/C, we could not completely remove the mass discrimination inherent in our method. We estimate the accuracy of our mixture analyses to be +-2.2% in the D/sub 2/-DT-T/sub 2/ system, and +-9% in the H/sub 2/-HT-T/sub 2/ syst… more

Placental transport of radionuclides. Terminal report, May 1, 1973--July 31, 1975. [Tritiated water, tritium, /sup 14/C, /sup 45/C, and /sup 47/C tracers]

Description: Four successful experiments were conducted with tritiated water on pregnant sheep. This came into equilibrium between fetal and maternal circulations within 60 seconds after injection into the ewe or the fetus. The estimates of total water transport rate averaged 85% of the daily water intake. Six successful experiments were conducted with /sup 3/H- and /sup 14/C-glucose on pregnant ewes. The results for glucose space and transport rate in the ewes agree closely with previously published data. … more

Synthesis of high specific activity (1- sup 3 H) farnesyl pyrophosphate

Description: The synthesis of tritiated farnesyl pyrophosphate with high specific activity is reported. trans-trans Farnesol was oxidized to the corresponding aldehyde followed by reduction with lithium aluminium tritide (5%-{sup 3}H) to give trans-trans (1-{sup 3}H)farnesol. The specific radioactivity of the alcohol was determined from its triphenylsilane derivative, prepared under very mild conditions. The tritiated alcohol was phosphorylated by initial conversion to an allylic halide, and subsequent trea… more

Assessment of microbial processes on gas production at radioactive low-level waste disposal sites

Description: Factors controlling gaseous emanations from low level radioactive waste disposal sites are assessed. Importance of gaseous fluxes of methane, carbon dioxide, and possible hydrogen from the site, stems from the inclusion of tritium and/or carbon-14 into the elemental composition of these compounds. In that the primary source of these gases is the biodegradation of organic components of the waste material, primary emphasis of the study involved an examination of the biochemical pathways producing… more

Migration of radionuclides following shallow land burial

Description: A study of radionuclide migration was conducted at a facility used from 1944 to 1949 for the shallow land burial of radwaste produced during operations with two reactors and related nuclear research. It is situated in glacial drift 45 m thick. Underlying the drift is a generally level Silurian dolomite bedrock 60 m thick. The thickness of the drift decreases as the surface slopes downhill (north) until the dolomite reaches the surface and forms the bed of a river, 700 m to the north. This study… more

Conceptual design of an emergency tritium clean-up system

Description: The Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) has been selected to design, build, and operate a facility to demonstrate the operability of the tritium-related subsystems that would be required to successfully develop fusion reactor systems. Basically, these subsystems would consist of the deuterium-tritium fuel cycle and associated environmental control systems. An emergency tritium clean-up subsystem (ETC) for this facility will be designed to remove tritium from the cell atmosphere if an accide… more

Tritium conversion and its influence on personnel protection at a fusion reactor

Description: Tritium gas is less hazardous than tritiated water. The difference appears to be on the order of 10/sup 4/ rather than the previously used figure of 10/sup 2/. With an additional factor of 10/sup 2/ for protective clothing, a potential difference of 10/sup 6/ in the relative HTO to HT hazard results. The mechanisms for conversion of HT to HTO are not fully known but models presented strongly link the presence of H and OH radicals with the ultimate formation of water. Therefore a hindrance of th… more

Low-exposure tritium radiotoxicity in mammals

Description: Studies of tritium radiotoxicity involving chronic /sup 3/H0H exposures in mammals demonstrate in both mice and monkeys that biological effects can be measured following remarkably low levels of exposure - levels in the range of serious practical interest to radiation protection. These studies demonstrate also that deleterious effects of /sup 3/H beta radiation do not differ significantly from those of gamma radiation at high exposures. In contrast, however, at low exposures tritium is signific… more

Calculations for estimating the equilibrium washout of tritium

Description: The equilibrium washout of tritiated water vapor (HTO) and tritium gas (HT) downwind from an instantaneous point source can be estimated by simple formulas. Derivations for three different models (Fickian Puff, Leaky Puff, and Leaky Garbage Can) are given for estimating the washout/m/sup 2/ from a puff. Two models are given (Leaky Garbage Can and Fickian Puff) for calculating the fraction of pollution remaining in a puff after it has traveled over an arbitrary distance. The relationship between… more

Specificity of interaction between carcinogenic polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and nuclear proteins: widespread occurrence of a restricted pattern of histone-binding in intact cells

Description: Metabolic activation of benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) produces a number of potentially reactive metabolites. The endproducts of one metabolic pathway, 7,8-dihydroxy-9,10-oxy-7,8,9,10-tetrahydro-B(a)P (BPDE) are responsible for essentially all DNA adduct formation in animal cells treated with B(a)P, and a particular stereoisomer, designated (+)-anti-BPDE is thought to be the ultimate carcinogenic derivative of B(a)P. In hamster embryo cell nuclei treated with (+)-anti-BPDE, two of the histones of the n… more
