ORMAK upgrade ohmic coil generator protection

Description: This report describes methods which can be used to limit the voltage across the generator for normal operation and various ground faults. It also contains quantitative information, obtained from the computer study, which can be used for evaluating the protection methods cost-wise.

Six phase rectifier digital computer simulation

Description: A digital computer program has been developed for the simulation of a six-pulse converter with a resistance-inductance load. The program calculates the time histories of the voltages and currents on both the ac and dc sides of the rectifier bridges. The grid delay angle is calculated in terms of the load current, supply voltage, and commutating reactance. The program is written in FORTRAN and is executable on the CDC7600 Plotted output of ten variables can be requested. This program is a prelim… more

Magnet power system for the Microwave Tokamak Experiment (MTX)

Description: The system configuration, layout, and general philosophy for the MTX magnet power system is described. The vast majority of the magnet power equipment was quite successfully used on the ALCATOR-C experiment at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The AC power for the magnet system at MIT was obtained from a 225MVA alternator. The power for the system at LLNL is obtained directly from the local utility's 230 kV line. This installation, therefore, necessitates the addition of a great deal o… more

Enhancing the power output of the VA-955 UHF-TV klystron

Description: The Varian VA-955 UHF-TV klystron is rated at 50 kW CW, and four of these klystrons were used to provide 200 kW of RF power for lower hybrid heating experiments on the ATC machine at 800 MHz. These proven, production-type tubes were wanted to generate more power for larger type machines, such as the PDX. Varian was asked whether the tubes were capable of higher-power operation in pulsed applications. They replied that they had no experimental data but felt that the tubes were capable of greatly… more

TFTR generator load assessment

Description: Typical experimental load demands on the TFTR generators are illustrated based on the electrical characteristics of the field coils, the coil leads, the main bus work, the various auxiliary bus work, the rectifiers, and transformers. The generator MW capacities are shown to be adequate for the proposed experimental operations with allowances made for variations in the final designs. The generator MVA capacities are shown to be adequate provided portions of the TF and EF rectifiers are freewheel… more

Development and use of 60 kV, and 150 kV floating deck modulators for high voltage protection of multi-megawatt ion beam accelerators

Description: Extraction currents of 60 A at 40 kV have been produced by utilizing a 60 kV floating deck modulator interfaced to a high voltage power supply. The modulator is operated in a series mode to repetitively pulse power to the ion beam accelerator. Current monitoring and other protective circuits provide interrupt commands to the series switch tube when faults occur. The constant current characteristics of the water cooled tetrode and the rapid response of the protective circuits effectively limit t… more
