Alloy development for irradiation performance. Quarterly progress report for period ending March 31, 1980

Description: This report is organized along topical lines in parallel to a Program Plan of the same title so that activities and accomplishments may be followed readily relative to that Program Plan. Thus, the work of a given laboratory may appear throughout the report. Chapters 1, 2, 8, and 9 review activities on analysis and evaluation, test methods development, status of irradiation experiments, and corrosion testing and hydrogen permeation studies, respectively. These activities relate to each of the al… more

Microstructural evolution during dual-ion irradiation of candidate fusion reactor materials

Description: Single- and dual-ion (heavy ions + /sup 3/He) irradiations of Fe-20wt.%Ni-15wt.%Cr, V-15wt.%Cr and Ti-6wt.%Al-4wt.%V alloys have been performed over a range of temperatures and doses. Various features of microstructural evolution during irradiation are reported as determined by transmission electron microscopy and Auger spectroscopy investigations.

Microstructural design and development of Path A Prime-Candidate Alloy

Description: This work summarizes the results of microstructural design and alloy development in the Path A Prime-Candidate Alloy (PCA). The basis for the microstructural design, basically, is the well-established MC-helium trapping mechanism and its correlation with improved swelling and embrittlement resistance in HFIR-irradiated 316 + Ti. A range of preirradiation microstructures were designed with variable combinations of matrix and grain-boundary precipitation prior to actual investigation of the PCA.

Deuterium plasma-material wall interactions. Progress report, 1 May 1978--30 Apr 1979

Description: During the past year we studied in detail plasma-first wall material damage induced by unipolar arcing. Unipolar arcing damage was analyzed as a function of material, surface preparation and microstructure. Unipolar arcing was found on all materials tested and the percentage of the surface area affected by arcing was similar for different metals. The severity of unipolar arcing was found to be very sensitive to microstructure. This was deduced through extensive study of different heat treatment… more
