GKS utilities for FORTRAN-77

Description: This document describes a number of subroutines that can be useful in GKS graphic applications programmed in FORTRAN-77. The algorithms described here include subroutines to do the following: (1) Draw text characters in a more flexible manner than is possible with basic GKS. (2) Project two-dimensional and three-dimensional space onto two-dimensional space. (3) Draw smooth curves. (4) Draw two-dimensional projections of complex three-dimensional objects. FORTRAN-77 is described in American Nati… more

Personal computers and All-In-1; Document transfer and translation

Description: The Savannah River site is currently utilizing a multi-vendor approach to provide Office Automation. Personal computer workstations include the Apple Mackintosh, IBM PC, DEC Rainbow and DEC VAXmate. Users of these workstations typically employ a variety of word processing and graphics packages to produce documents, many of which need to be exchanged in revisable form with users of different word processing packages. Since most of these users are utilizing terminal emulators to access the depart… more

Using fullscreen CMS at CERN

Description: Fullscreen CMS is an optional console environment introduced in Release 5 of CMS which maintains the context of a VM session across invocations of full screen commands like XEDIT, FILELIST or MAIL. In addition it allows limited scrolling and windowing capabilities. This write-up provides CERNVM users who are interested in Fullscreen CMS with an overview of the concepts and operations which are involved. In that it is an optional environment, this write-up does not constitute an endorsement of F… more

Rigorous, systematic approach to automatic data editing and its statistical basis

Description: Automatic data editing is the computerized identification and correction (optional) of data errors. These techniques can provide error statistics that indicate the frequency of various types of data errors, diagnostic information that aids in identifying inadequacies in the data collection system, and a clean data base appropriate for use in further decision making, in modeling, and for inferential purposes. However, before these numerous benefits can be fully realized, certain research problem… more

Automated insertion of sequences into a ribosomal RNA alignment: An application of computational linguistics in molecular biology

Description: This thesis involved the construction of (1) a grammar that incorporates knowledge on base invariancy and secondary structure in a molecule and (2) a parser engine that uses the grammar to position bases into the structural subunits of the molecule. These concepts were combined with a novel pinning technique to form a tool that semi-automates insertion of a new species into the alignment for the 16S rRNA molecule (a component of the ribosome) maintained by Dr. Carl Woese's group at the Universi… more

Debugging Fortran on a shared memory machine

Description: Debugging on a parallel processor is more difficult than debugging on a serial machine because errors in a parallel program may introduce nondeterminism. The approach to parallel debugging presented here attempts to reduce the problem of debugging on a parallel machine to that of debugging on a serial machine by automatically detecting nondeterminism. 20 refs., 6 figs.

OPM Scheme Editor 2: A graphical editor for specifying object-protocol structures

Description: This document describes an X-window based Schema Editor for the Object-Protocol Model (OPM). OPM is a data model that supports the specification of complex object and protocol classes. objects and protocols are qualified in OPM by attributes that are defined over (associated with) value classes. Connections of object and protocol classes are expressed in OPM via attributes. OPM supports the specification (expansion) of protocols in terms of alternative and sequences of component (sub) protocols… more

Description: VLT came to be used at SLAC (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center), because SLAC wanted to assess the Amiga's usefulness as a color graphics terminal and T{sub E}X workstation. Before the project could really begin, the people at SLAC needed a terminal emulator which could successfully talk to the IBM 3081 (now the IBM ES9000-580) and all the VAXes on the site. Moreover, it had to compete in quality with the Ann Arbor Ambassador GXL terminals which were already in use at the laboratory. Unfortuna… more
