Decommissioning of a grout- and waste-filled storage tank in the 200 East Area of the Hanford Site

Description: A self-concentrating waste tank located at the Strontium Semiworks Facility in the 200 East Area of the Hanford Site will be decommissioned following waste removal. During a previous decommissioning phase, the tank, thought to be empty, was filled with grout to prevent it from collapsing over time. Several years later, an agitator rod was pulled from within the tank and found to contain significant amounts of radiation, indicating there was still radioactive waste in the tank. Several alternati… more

Investigation of breached depleted UF sub 6 cylinders

Description: In June 1990, during a three-site inspection of cylinders being used for long-term storage of solid depleted UF{sub 6}, two 14-ton cylinders at Portsmouth, Ohio, were discovered with holes in the barrel section of the cylinders. An investigation team was immediately formed to determine the cause of the failures and their impact on future storage procedures and to recommend corrective actions. Subsequent investigation showed that the failures most probably resulted from mechanical damage that oc… more

Investigation of cooling coil corrosion in storage tanks for radioactive waste

Description: The high frequency of cooling coil leaks observed in high-heat waste storage tanks soon after sludge removal operations is attributed to pitting, according to laboratory corrosion studies. Experiments show that the most likely series of events leading to coil leakage is (1) excessive dilution of basic nitrite in the supernate, (2) initiation of attack in crevices due to oxygen depletion cells, and (3) acceleration of the attack by sulfate dissolved from the sludge. When sludge was slurried with… more

Innovative technology demonstrations

Description: Currently, several innovative technologies are being demonstrated at Tinker Air Force Base (TAFB) to address specific problems associated with remediating two contaminated test sites at the base. Cone penetrometer testing (CPT) is a form of testing that can rapidly characterize a site. This technology was selected to evaluate its applicability in the tight clay soils and consolidated sandstone sediments found at TAFB. Directionally drilled horizontal wells have been successfully installed at th… more

Calmac Ice Storage Test Report

Description: The Ice Storage Test Facility (ISTF) is designed to test commercial ice storage systems. Calmac provided a storage tank equipped with coils designed for use with a secondary fluid system. The Calmac ice storage system was tested over a wide range of operating conditions. Measured system performance during charging was similar to that reported by the manufacturer. Both the measured average and minimum brine temperatures were in close agreement with Calmac's literature values, and the ability to … more

Tank 241-A-105 leak assessment

Description: Tank 241-A-105 is one of 149 single shell tanks constructed at Hanford to contain and store highly radioactive wastes originating from the processing of spent nuclear reactor fuel. Radiation detection and temperature monitoring devices installed beneath the tank indicate that several episodes of leakage of waste from the tank have occurred. The aim of this study was to evaluate the previous estimates and reanalyze the data to provide a more accurate estimate of leakage from the tank. The princi… more

Telescopic zoom lens attachment for magnified views in underwater radiation environments

Description: This document consists of the notes that accompany a slide presentation (15 slides). The discussion begins with the need for the Telescopic Zoom Lens or TZL; why is was designed and fabricated as well as the design restraints that dictated its final form and function. Next is the use and modification of existing equipment; equipment that was used to remotely scan a nuclear reactor tank using eddy current and ultrasound. The uniqueness of the TZL mechanism itself is discussed; how it meets the d… more

Potential for using a six-phase alternating current power supply system for in situ vitrification

Description: In situ vitrification (ISV) has been identified as a potential treatment technology for stabilizing underground tanks at Hanford and other US Department of Energy (DOE) sites. A key requirement for this application is an electrical system that can supply the power needed to vitrify a tank in a single setting. This paper describes an engineering-scale test conducted at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) to assess the efficiency of a six-electrode, six-phase energy supply system in melting so… more

Possible explosive compounds in the Savannah River Site waste tank farm facilities

Description: Based on a comparison of the known constituents in high-level nuclear waste stored at the Savannah River Site (SRS) and explosive compounds reported in the literature, only two classes of explosive compounds (metal NO{sub x} compounds and organic compounds) were identified as requiring further work to determine if they exist in the waste, and if so, in what quantities. Of the fourteen classes of explosive compounds identified as conceivably being present in tank farm operations, nine classes (m… more

Materials aspects of SRP waste storage: corrosion and mechanical failure

Description: Studies were made on the causes of observed leaks in mild steel tanks used to store liquid waste from nuclear fuel reprocessing at the Savannah River Plant. Leaks were observed in the walls of some primary vessels and in some cooling coils. The studies revealed that: wall leaks resulted from nitrate stress corrosion cracking caused by alkaline nitrate solution; and coil leaks resulted from pitting corrosion caused by diluted waste solutions during sludge removal. Stresses that caused wall crack… more

Development of Megasonic cleaning for silicon wafers. Quarterly report No. 3, September 15, 1979-December 14, 1979

Description: During this period the total Megasonic system has been operated regularly and is functioning well. The most critical missing part is the belt drive for the air-drying system; delivery of this drive is now scheduled for the end of January. Preliminary data on wafer cleaning and rinsing indicate that the design criteria of cleaning ability, ease of operation, and safety have been largely achieved. Chemicals utilization appears to be even better than anticipated.

Computational method for free surface hydrodynamics

Description: There are numerous flow phenomena in pressure vessel and piping systems that involve the dynamics of free fluid surfaces. For example, fluid interfaces must be considered during the draining or filling of tanks, in the formation and collapse of vapor bubbles, and in seismically shaken vessels that are partially filled. To aid in the analysis of these types of flow phenomena, a new technique has been developed for the computation of complicated free-surface motions. This technique is based on th… more
