Mechanisms governing fine particulate emissions from coal flames

Description: During this reporting period the global experiments were concluded. The final activities under these experiments involved measuring mineral content of coals as a function of coal particle size. The principal activities during this quarter involved the mechanistic experiments. Three baseline coals were cleaned and two of these sized. The ash from these various cuts were sampled from a bench scale reactor. The ash size distributions were compared to distributions predicted by the breakup model.

Self-pumping vapor system for hybrid space heating

Description: This paper reports investigations of a passive system that transports heat from a solar collector downward. Refrigerant is evaporated in a collector and the vapor transports heat to one or more condensers located at an arbitrary elevation below the collector. The vapor pressure lifts the condensed liquid to an accumulator located near the top of the collector. The results of annual performance calculations are presented for a space heating application in which one or more condensers are located… more

Trade-offs in size, quantity and reliability of generalized nuclear power plants: a preliminary assessment

Description: An approximate method is used to estimate the effects of system reliability on optimal nuclear plant size, taking into account also scale factors and manufacturing learning curve slopes. The method is used to estimate the additional effective capability gained by adding units of different sizes to an existing electrical system. The number of additional units proves to be sensitive to forced outrage rate, estimated here from trends in US light-water reactors from 1971 to 1980. The relative cost … more

Automated microscopy methods for measuring pyritic sulfur content of coal and determining degree of liberation of pyrite in coal: Final report

Description: The objective of this project is to develop an automated procedure, to be implemented in an IBAS image analyzer, to determine size, shape and degree of liberation of pyrite particles in a coal matrix. This procedure is to work in real time conditions and with minimal intervention from the operator. Our approach is to create from the original microscopic image a three level image with the following components: epoxy, coal macerals and pyrite to simplify the calculations. Commercial bacterial colony counter for semiautomatic track counting

Description: Bacterial colony counters have not been widely used for track counting. However, they do provide an economical alternative to sophisticated optical analyzers for applications that require reproducible track density measurements for large numbers of samples. Simple measurements of size characteristics can be made when there is little need for high resolutions. Such systems are particularly well suited for neutron and alpha dosimetry work, particularly if electrochemical etching or some other tra… more
